UWindsor Lancers Cheerleading

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UWindsor chapter.

Remember the last time you went to a Lancer football game?  What about those girls standing alongside the field making sure that the fans stayed loud and proud?  Well those girls are your University of Windsor Cheerleading squad.  These girls stand for the entire game, whether it is hot or freezing outside.  It isn’t just football games they cheer for; they also cheer on both the women’s and men’s basketball teams.  During each and every one of these games these girls are constantly cheering, and dancing while keeping huge smiles on their faces.

Most people do not think of cheerleading as a highly competitive sport.  As a team, these girls must work together to make sure that all of their dances, stunts, tumbling, and cheering are all on count.  This routine takes about three minutes and is performed in front of huge crowds at competitions.  The judges scrutinize every single stunt, tumbling line and dance movement.  These cheerleaders must move gracefully with exact movements across the competition floor.  If one person is off on her timing, there could be a collision or deductions from the judges.

Our Windsor Lancers Cheerleading team competed last November for the first time since 2005.  This was important for the girls that were new to the sport of cheerleading to gain experience on the competition floor.  The team will be returning to this national competition again this year where they will once again demonstrate their Lancer pride!

Have you ever tried to smile through a four hour football game? It’s hard.  And doing that while performing dances, and throwing fellow team members in the air to perform stunts definitely ups the difficulty.  How hard could it be? Wave the pom poms around? Jump up and down? Scream a couple cheers?  Most people think that it is easy, but it definitely is not.  It is physically and mentally exhausting.  As a cheerleading one must focus on movements, positioning, cheering and smiling throughout an entire game or competition!
