Foods Every College Student Should Keep In Their Dorm

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UWG chapter.

Food is a part of everyday life. We’ve gotta eat it sooner or later. As a college student, it seems like sometimes we don’t eat as much as we should. It seems like there’s just no time! We go to the dining halls when we’re not tired of it, and the rest of the time we eat out. But it can’t be like this anymore. When we eat out so often, it’s not only hurting our wallets, but also our insides too. That’s why I’m gonna share some foods every college student should keep in their dorm or apartment.

MEALS

Bread (& all the fixings!):

I can make a mean sandwich, if I do say so myself. Sandwiches are probably one of the best alternative food options in my opinion. They’re just easy to make! And when you use the right toppings, they can be pretty healthy too. Just add some cheese, turkey, lettuce, and tomatoes, and you’re done! You can substitute potato chips with kettle or baked chips, for a healthier option.

Microwavable Rice:

Don’t question it,; just go with it. Microwavable rice can save your life . Oor at least your stomach.… You can pour it over salad (because if you’re like me, plain salad cannot fill you up), add some tomatoes, cheese, chicken, and a vinaigrette dressing, and you’ve got yourself a healthy meal! Tip: use brown rice for an even healthier option :)

Potatoes:

Just microwave ‘em, put some cheese, butter (only a little bit!), and a vegetable of your choice, and there’s another quick and easy meal. (Veggie tip: I like to add broccoli as well as chili to mine.)

SNACKS

Pita Chips:

These are a great alternative to regular potato chips, and there’s a wide variety of pita chips to choose from. You have cinnamon, multigrain, jalapeno, toasted cheddar, and more! Stacy’s Pita Chips are my top pick, but if you were really feeling like a chef, you could even make your own (but of course, you would have to have an oven…). However you’re gonna munch on pita chips, get some salsa or hummus, and you’re good to go!

Granola Bars:

Ever since elementary school, granola bars have been one of my alltime favorite snacks. They have ones with chocolate chips, ones with peanut butter chips, and even s’more-flavored ones! They’re super portable and easy to snack on, and they’re also made of oats. Healthy? Check. Boom.

DIY Lunchables:

Now, for another one of my childhood favorites: Lunchables. Except I never thought to DIY them, until now. Just grab some crackers, and add on the sliced cheese and turkey. If you really want to have the full “childhood” effect, treat yourself to a little candy bar on the side :)

And there you have it! Some healthy (and somewhat unhealthy; I’m looking at you, candy bar) food options for every college student. I hope that by reading this article, you’re inspired to take action and eat right (and to find time to eat; don’t let college take over your eating life). Happy eating!
