Pros and Cons of Living With the opposite Sex

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Stout chapter.

“You live with boys?! How do you manage? You have how many roommates?!”

Living in a mixed gender household I get asked questions all along the spectrum. When it comes down to deciding who your roommates are it is a very important question you need to ask yourself. At UW-Stout your first two years typically are spent living in the dorms and with one-two other people of the same sex. When it comes to your third year living situation it is all up to you what you choose.

It might seem overwhelming: where do you want to live, how much are you willingly to pay on rent, do you want a place that allows pets, how many roommates do you want, the list goes on.. The most important question is who do you want to live with? Her Campus U-Wisconsin Stout decided to ask people on campus how it is living with the opposite sex:

Pros of living with opposite sex:

“My house is cleaner because the girls are more tidy and aren’t as messy as guys.” –Jordan P

“The guys are willing to kill bugs and spiders for me.” –Mackenzie M

“Having a guy’s perspective and advice on certain topics.” –Megan P

“Teaches me how to make a variety of people happy in the house.” –Logan L

“Less emotions flying in the house because there are less girls.” –Kaitlyn N

“The guys do not have drama, thankfully.” –Laura B

Cons of living with opposite sex:

“Girl talk can be awkward if one of the guys are around because they don’t take it seriously and can be immature about girl things.” –Megan P

“Dealing with girl drama.” –Jordan P

“There are a lot more products in the shower with girls.” –Logan L

“Boys can be gross at times, they make weird noises and clog the toilet.” –Laura B

“Walking around in my boxers when the girls have friends over can get weird.” -Ben S

“There’s less girls to share clothes with!” Mackenzie M

At the end of the day, the people you choose to live with typically will be your life friends. Choose wisely and keep living situations in mind when deciding roommates. Although these are just a few pros and cons to living with the opposite sex there will always be pros and cons in other living situations (all girl, all boy, etc. living situations.)
