Meet Dance Team Captain, Cortney Williams

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Stout chapter.

Name: Cortney Williams

Major: Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management

Year: Senior

Hometown: Coon Rapids, MN

HC: What made you choose to attend UW-Stout?

CW: Ultimately, it was my major, but a huge plus is that it’s only an hour and ten minutes away from my hometown. People get home sick so the fact that I can drive home any day of the week to see my family made Stout the best choice for me.

HC: What are some of your favorite things about Stout?

CW: I love the campus and being able to walk everywhere. Being from a suburb, I can’t walk to my friends houses or restaurants. I also like that there are so many areas to hang out and do homework on campus. Between the Library, Jarvis, and the MSC, there is truly a spot for everyone to feel in their comfort zone while on campus.

HC: How are you involved on Campus?

CW: The Dance Team is my main involvement and takes up a lot of my time, but I am also a member of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC). When I’m not doing homework or hanging with friends, I try to take as many volunteer opportunities that I can be involved with athletics and different campus organizations.

HC: What are some of the best aspects about being a part of the Dance Team?

CW: The best thing about being a part of the Dance Team is traveling to and from competitions/performances. Jamming out in the car for an hour with my girls is the best way to start my day. Also, we have pump up songs where we all dance and shake out the nerves before we perform. We are a dance team, but we are also a family, so it’s nice to be a part of a family that shares a common interest. We share our passion and love for dance.

HC: What’s your favorite part about being Captain of the team?

CW: My favorite thing about being captain is leading everyone to the same end goal. As a dance team our main focus is on our performances, so we are all working to perfect a dance to have a great performance. I love the responsibility of ensuring that everyone is working hard and working together, but having fun while doing it.

HC: What prompted you to major in Hotel Restaurant and Tourism Management?

CW: I originally wanted to be an event coordinator. I love weddings and planning/organizing parties/events. Growing up, my Mom worked in a hotel so I wanted nothing to do with hotels, but after taking a summer job as a guest service representative I fell in love with the front desk. I then knew my future was in hotels, but planning events will always be a hobby.

HC: What are your plans and aspirations for the future?

CW: After college, I want to spend a few years in Las Vegas. Ideally, as a front office manager at either the Mirage, Caesars Palace, or the Bellagio.
