A Beginner’s Guide to Bullet Journaling

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Lax chapter.

I have noticed myself getting very anxious about a lot of things lately and my friend suggested to start bullet journaling. She says it is a great reliever because it gives you control over something in life. In college and school, many things are given and planned for us so we do not get to experience total control over something too often.

I am sure many of you have heard of bullet journaling. You may not know what it entails or how to do it but you have heard of it. It has been around for a few years now and many people have become OBSESSED  with it. Bullet journaling is a great tool in college because it is more than just a to-do list or a calendar for assignments and important dates. This journal can keep your whole life together. Ryder Carrol says this journal will help you track the past, order the present, and design your future. I mean that should amazing, but how do you achieve that?

Well, Pinterest is going to be your best friend for this. What I did was created a board, searched bullet journal ideas and started pinning all sorts of ideas I liked. I have pages for homework assignments, daily events and schedules, birthdays, health trackers, mood trackers, etc. Not only does this keep your life together, but by dedicating time every day to do this it will help clear your mind and focus on what is important.

I want to warn all of you – do not get discouraged at the beginning if yours doesn’t turn out as cute as the one in Pinterest. It takes practice. That is why I love to have doodle pages so I can practice drawing little pictures of calligraphy. In the beginning, mine wasn’t cute but as I practiced it has turned into something I love and am so proud of.

As you grow further into your journal you can add all sorts of other pages like grocery lists, goals bucket lists, doodle pages, etc. The ideas are endless. The beauty of it is that you can get as creative as you want because it is completely made by you and each one is unique and personalized. No matter what stage you are in life, teenage, college students, parent, grandparent, etc, bullet journaling can be beneficial to your life!

Here is the journal I use:

There are many journals out there like this one. I love that it has dots and not lines so you can create any design on the pages with guidance but not full lines that are distracting.

Here are the pens I use:

Paper Mate Flair Pens- They do not bleed through pages and work great to draw, write, or anything in between. They do smear a bit so you do have to let them dry a little after writing.
