Top Sunscreen to Use Amidst a Recall Issued by the FDA

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVM chapter.

Amidst all the chaos brought to us by the life-altering COVID-19, we often get caught up in horror of it all and forget to take care of our bodies and minds. With that being said, Summer 2020 is well on its way and it’s almost time to switch up our skincare products.  Possibly the most important of them all– SUNSCREEN. Though it may be cloudy with no sign of UV Rays hitting our skin on any given day, the summer months are undoubtedly the time in which we need to be the most careful with our skin and what we put on it.

As of May 2019, the FDA (Federal Drug Administration) published new research in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA)[1] that sheds a much needed light onto the active ingredients in different sunscreens, and the effects these ingredients have on the body once absorbed into the bloodstream.

As of now, only physical sunscreens– also known as ‘mineral sunscreens’– with active ingredients zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are recognized as safe by the FDA. Here are the best sunscreens to use according to GH Beauty Lab experts, dermatologists, and the FDA:

1. Hawaiian Tropic AntiOxidant+ Sunscreen Lotion

Made without oxybenzone or octinoxate, this sunscreen provides a protective layer of antioxidants. Helps prevent skin damage and skin aging frequently caused by the sun.  Easy to apply, and also smells delicious!

2. Neutrogena SheerZinc Face Sunscreen SPF 50

Consumers find this zinc-oxide face sunscreen easy to apply and extremely effective at preventing sunburns. This silky smooth formula also means that you can apply it under your foundation without interference with makeup application!

3. Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen

This is THE sunscreen for people with sensitive skin. Made without any synthetic fragrance, dyes, or parabens, this zinc and titanium-based SPF 30 lotion may be applied without worry of making your face red or blotchy.

4. Coola Classic Body Sunscreen

A spray that stays! This sheer, water- and sweat-resistant organic formula is packed with antioxidants and skin-nourishing ingredients, and absorbs fast with no greasy feel. So you can play hard without any slippery residue.

5. TULA Protect + Glow Daily Sunscreen Gel Broad

A broad spectrum sunscreen that provides daily SPF 30 plus protection from damaging pollution & blue light—a must have for indoors & outdoors. Leaves a gorgeous glow that wears well under makeup or on its own.
