Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays. But not because of the candy, or the haunted houses, or scary movies. It’s simply the best because of the fashion! I always love picking out a good costume a few weeks prior, and it’s always fun to try and predict what the year’s trendiest costumes will be. Now that the Halloweekend is over, it’s time for my 2021 Halloween Costume Review. Over the weekend, I kept an eye out for UVA’s best and worst costumes and have made my final picks. I made three categories: Best New Costumes, The Classics, and Costumes That Should Have Died With 2020.

Best New costumes

  • Pitbull — So, so funny. 10/10. Extra points if a bald cap was part of the costume.
  • Fembot — Every girl I saw dressed up as one just looked so nice and clean. Perfect mix of sweet and flirty.
  • Pete Davidson and Timothee Chalamet, “Yeet” SNL Skit — This costume might be a bit niche, but for the SNL fans out there, this was an absolute hit.
  • Y2K/Paris Hilton — As an avid lover of the early 2000’s, these looks were my fav. So fashionable.
  • “Squid Game” costumes — I’m still not over this Netflix show, and I’m here for all the creepy costumes.

The classics

  • The Plastics from Mean Girls — This will forever be iconic. The best costume for four besties.
  • Barbie — Timeless choice and such a fun costume! Couldn’t get enough of the pink outfits.
  • Pirate — Love it. So fresh. Great way to revive an old classic with a modern corset.
  • Disney Princess — you can’t go wrong with this one, especially if you have a big friend group to coordinate with.
  • Fairy — Such an elegant costume! Only problem is trying not to whack people with your wings when you’re dancing at the frats.

COstumes that should have died with 2020

  • School Girl — What exactly is so “sexy” to you about dressing up as a child? Let’s all retire this costume idea.
  • Sports Jersey “Costume” — Not a real costume. Seriously, do better.
  • Space Cowgirl — This had its moment last year, but by now, it is so overdone.
  • Angel/Devil — Y’all knew how basic this duo was and went with it anyway. Mix it up.
  • Playboy Bunnies — Overdone to the point where this costume no longer has a “wow” effect.

I hope you all liked my picks and didn’t take my classifications too seriously. Halloween is all about finding the perfect costume for you, so dress to your heart’s desire! And as Cady said in “Mean Girls”, “In Girl World, Halloween is the one day a year when a girl can dress up like a total sl*t and no other girls can say anything else about it”. So, I hope you enjoyed the week and took advantage of this *~magical~* time of the year.
