Korede Akinsete ’14

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVA chapter.

At UVA, sometimes it’s easy to blend into the crowd of Barbour jackets and tall brown riding boots.  Not only does this fashionable Campus Celebrity stand out from the crowd, but she has a great eye for spotting fellow fashionistas. Second year Korede Akinsete writes for Virginia’s Branch of College Fashionistas: a fashion blog dedicated to college street style. Every Friday, Korede writes the Accessories Report, showing off what some fellow stylish Wahoos have accessorized themselves with. Definitely take a fashion note from Korede, and who knows, maybe you’ll be spotted as her next fashionista!

Hometown:Lived in Lagos, Nigeria until I was 15. Then finished off high school in New York City.

Major:PreComm

How do you spot fashionistas around grounds?
At first I used to go on style spotting missions with my friends. Now I just spot while walking to classes on grounds. I’ve always paid attention to how people put together outfits so it’s a lot less time consuming and a lot more organic.

What’s the best fashion tip you could give a girl?
Definitely to dress according to your body. Not all trends suit everyone so it’s important to find trends that play up your best features and then personalize them so you don’t look like everyone else.  But more importantly, be confident!

What or who influences you the most when it comes to fashion?
Definitely influenced by my mood, daily activities and surroundings. My style tends to change a little depending on if I’m in UVA, New York or Lagos. As for a person, if there’s anyone’s closet I’m in love with at the moment it’s Solange Knowles. I’ve also always loved the Olsen sisters.

How does the fashion style here compare to that of Lagos or New York?
More put together but less daring.

What’s your favorite UVA trend? Least favorite?
My favorite is Turbands. Starting to see a lot more girls with this convenient yet stylish accessory. (Check out Korede’s latest posting about Turbands: http://www.collegefashionista.com/school/view/university_virginia/accessories_report_head_gear_
Honorable mention to Ray-Ban wayfarers. I feel like they have a way of adding a rock star vibe to any outfit.
My least favorite: Sweatpants to class! I mean it’s okay once in a while during midterms and finals but not everyday. Jeans or leggings could easily substitute for sweatpants and are actually flattering. Also, I’ve seen a couple of guys in basketball shorts and UGG boots. I can only assume they had trouble with the weather forecast.

What do you like to do for fun?
I love going to concerts, arguing about hip hop, and of course shopping.

Neiman Marcus or a thrift store?
Thrift Stores all day!

What’s one fashion accessory that you can’t leave your house without?
My bangles and headphones (arguably a fashion accessory).

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
To heal the sick and enlighten all ignorant people
