I was clearly people watching. On one of the cloudy days this week, I sat on a bench outside Newcomb with an unopened book in my lap. It was nearly dinnertime, and thus I knew I’d be sure to see plenty of well-dressed people heading past me towards the dining hall.

I almost missed Emma. She was walking away from Newcomb with a friend, on the side of him opposite from me. It’s the boots that I noticed first—I’ve always had a thing for shoes, and these ones are exceptionally cute. Emma matched them perfectly to her sequined tiger sweater and the origami-structured plaid skirt added another interesting touch.

This isn’t your typical Virginia outfit, and that’s why I love it. I wasn’t searching for preppy on this particular day. I was searching for something that defied stereotypes and even somewhat “broke the rules”, and with this outfit Emma did both of these things. Dark colors, plaid and sequins, tights in summer. I love the way this outfit catches my eye and keeps my attention for longer than that.
