Halloween is almost here!

I’ve noticed that people today love to remember the “good old times”, and I’m not talking about the 80’s or the 90’s, but the 2000’s and the 2010’s. Many trends from those two decades are coming back, such as low-rise jeans, trousers under dresses, and platform shoes (from the 2000’s) and crop tops, skinny jeans, and normcore sneakers (from the 2010’s).

But right now, with Halloween just around the corner, and with the beginning of the fall season, let’s talk about something that kept many young girls playing and allowing themselves to accept who they are. I’m talking about the Monster High franchise. These fabulous dolls that taught us to be who we are and accept our own flaws. Next up are the seven best Monster High characters that best honour that philosophy.

1. Twyla

First, we got the shy and quiet daughter of the Boogie Man. Since she was presented to us in the 13 Wishes Monster High movie, Twyla has been known as someone who would prefer to sit back in the shadows with just a few but true friends. Twyla is a good representation that being an introvert is not wrong at all. Everyone appreciates a calming personality, as well as a down-to-earth friend who would help you stay on your feet just like Twyla does with her best friend Howleen in the 13 Wishes movie.

2. Wolf

Here now comes Twyla’s best friend, Howleen Wolf, the small sister of the famous Clawdeen Wolf. Howleen had a pretty rough time accepting herself in the 13 Wishes movie. She wanted to become popular, and she was willing to even turn her best friends down to reach her goal. Eventually, she came to realize that she needed to appreciate the friends that she already had, for they were who truly loved her for who she really is. Howleen came to realize that she didn’t need to change her whole self to accept herself

3. Draculaura

One of the main Monster High characters that ever came out of the franchise. The daughter of Dracula would have been thought to be a cold blood thirsty monster, but rather, Draculaura came off as a surprise to everyone. She’s all about friendship and love, and what makes her even more special is that she’s different from all the other vampires, and this is just for the fact that she’s a vegetarian, and she faints whenever she gets a glimpse of blood. Along the Monster High episodes we can see that some vampires and other monsters consider Draculaura as weird just because she does not drink blood. However, she does not care about this as long as she’s comfortable with herself and has her own friends at her side that also love who she is.

4. Clawdeen Wolf

Another of the main characters of the franchise. Clawdeen Wolf is simply super inspiring. I’m very sure that, when Monster High first came out, everyone’s favourite character was Clawdeen. She is simply a strong feminine character. She has a strong and determined personality, while at the same time, she’s super caring and loyal to all of her friends. And! She has a great sense of style. She was one of the characters that, growing up, would show young girls that a girl is also able to do things that only boys were thought to do.

5. Catty Noir

The great singer and star of Monster High, and the main character of the franchise’s first musical Boo York. Catty Noir not only has a beautiful design and concept, but she also taught us through her movie that it’s okay to lose who you are for a bit. In the Boo York movie, we see Catty going into a hiatus because she no longer felt that she was true to herself. She used to sing about love, but she didn’t quite feel it. That’s until she meets Pharao (the love interest) who helps her find again her inner voice. Catty didn’t want to sing about love as in a relationship. She wanted to sing about her love for music.

6. Cleo de Nile and Deuce Gorgon

Ok, here’s a tie for number six because Cleo and Deuce taught us more about accepting one another.

We know that Cleo is a princess, and therefore, her family does not quite accept her boyfriend Deuce. In the Boo York movie, we see Cleo trying to change who Deuce is just so he can be better accepted into her family. But eventually we see them breaking up because of this tension. They eventually come back together but is not until both understand that their love only works if they accept each other, no matter how different they are and who their families are.

7. Lagoona Blue

Another one is our dear main characters that came out of the franchise. Lagoona Blue is the daughter of the sea monster, and she has a relationship with Gil, who’s a fresh water monster. Both are from different species, and Lagoona becomes super stressed about this in the 13 Wishes movie. She wants to be accepted by Gil’s family, and for this, she literally changes herself so she could become a fresh water monster, changing her entire persona. In the movie we slowly see how Lagoona loses herself just to be accepted by someone else, but in the end, we see how Gil loves her for who she really is. And at the same time, Lagoona realizes that she doesn’t need to change herself in order to be approved by others. If they like her, good. If they don’t, does it matter?

I know that there are so many more Monster High characters that honour the motto of “accept yourself and your own flaws”, but the previous seven characters are in my opinion the best representations of the motto.

Honestly, Monster High was a HUGE icon of the 2010’s. Who doesn’t remember their iconic song “Monster High”. And with Halloween approaching, and the nostalgia coming back to our society, I just feel like watching once again their episodes and movies.
