Questions Every Girl with Curly Hair Has Heard

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UTM chapter.

Ever since I was little, the first trait people notice about me is my curly hair. When I say my hair is curly, it doesn’t mean I have beach waves that can be fixed with a hairbrush. It means that my hair is a giant collection of ringlets that’s just as wide and tall as it is long. My hair constantly makes me look like a poodle, and styling products and flat irons can even begin to tame my curls. Having hair like this my whole life has caused me to hear the same questions over and over about it, and I’m sure anyone with curly hair can relate. Here are some of the most frequent ones:

1. Are your curls natural?

They’re 100% real. People ask me all the time what I use to make my hair curly, but that’s just how I was born. Now, if you want recommendations on what I use to manage my curls, that’s different. I could write an entire book on every product I’ve tried, from shampoo and conditioner to hot oil root treatments.

2. Can I touch your hair?

If you ask this, expect me to reply with a firm no. It takes the perfect amount of hair product and styling to prevent my curls from becoming a frizzy mess, and it’s so easy to mess up. I don’t even touch my own hair once it’s dry because I’m honestly a little scared of what my curls are capable of.

3. Do you ever try straighten it?

I wish! The problem is that my hair is so curly a regular flat iron won’t keep it straight. After a few hours, the ends of my hair start to curl back up, and it looks like a mess. If I got my hair straightened professionally it would last, but let’s be honest, I’m a college student who doesn’t have the time or money for that.

4. Do you like having curly hair?

I love it! It’s easy for me to complain about my hair since I have to constantly deal will all of the struggles that come with it, but I wouldn’t trade my curls for the world. I feel like they make me stand out, and I get complimented on my hair pretty often. Even though it can be hard to manage, my curly hair is my favorite thing about my appearance.
