You were the first person to hold her when she was born. You taught her the alphabet, colors, how to count to 10 and what your cell phone number was in case of emergencies. You helped her learn how to ride a bike, and you bandaged her knee the first time she fell. You taught her how to keep the soap from getting into her eyes, and combed her hair for picture day. You helped her read books, study for her vocabulary test and made sure she learned all her spelling words. She tried new things like cheerleading, basketball, softball and tennis. You wore her school colors, and she always looked for you in the bleachers. She moved on to joining clubs, writing papers and constantly being on the go. Along with this, she encountered heartbreaks, failures and a few minor setbacks, but it was nothing you could not handle. You watched her, dressed in cap and gown, walk down a line and grab her diploma. For the next few months, you grasped onto the same little girl who you held as soon as she came into this big world.

Dear Mom,

As I grew, you grew, even though it feels like you have never aged. Thank you for teaching me lessons, especially right from wrong. Thank you for keeping the same phone number for nearly 30 years. Thank you for bandaging more than just knees, but also my heart when I make choices that cut me deeply. Thank you for reminding me about the importance of a good education. Thank you for wearing orange and blue, and yelling “Go Skyhawks!” Thank you for the love and encouragement you have given me since the day I was born. You are appreciated and loved more than you could ever know.

Mom, I love you so much. You’re my anchor. Thank you for keeping me grounded, but also allowing me to use my wings to soar. This life would be simply boring without you. It is because of you I can be where I am today. Thank you for helping me and becoming my closest friend. I am truly blessed to have a mother like you.

I never told you enough how much I love you. I never told you how much I appreciated you. You handle my attitude with grace. You tell me my flaws are beautiful. You are my shoulder to cry on, my light when everything seems dark, and my constant reminder to keep pushing through. You love me endlessly. I cannot thank you enough for that.

Love,

Your daughter
