How to Spread the Holiday Spirit: Be Kind

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UTM chapter.

Despite all of the magical and fun things that come with the Christmas season, it can also be a stressful time. Expectations are usually high, and bank accounts can be low. The pressure is on to find the right gift for everyone, to find room in your schedule to attend one more party and to find parking places at the mall. Regardless of this, we should always remain kind to one another.

The hectic time of year usually brings everyone out and about to cross off their checklist, so the sheer volume of people on the go can make even the simplest processes frustrating. Add to the mix that expectations are usually high, and bank accounts can be low. However, it’s our responsibility as mature adults to act appropriately.

This is especially true for Black Friday ventures. Fighting over an item or doing something foolish with potentially harsh consequences isn’t worth it. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been up shopping, how long you’ve stood in line, or how cold or hungry you are, you should treat everyone with respect and not childishly lash out.

Please keep this in mind when dealing with retail store employees. They are not below you and do not work as your slave. They should be treated with kindness and respect always. If this is not reciprocated, take a deep breath and let it roll off of your shoulders. Chances are, their moods have been altered by others who did not care.

Shopping can be stressful and don’t be snappy with any company employee about things that are out of their control. You may have had to wait in a long line, your product may no longer be available, and maybe your request wasn’t compliant with company policy, but there is no reason to get mean. Those things are out of their hands.

If fighting the holiday buzz isn’t your cup of tea, you can always try to plan around it by shopping early, later or online, as a few suggestions. It is not entirely possible to miss all of the holiday chaos, but you can try to alleviate it by planning ahead.

Christmas is a time of love, joy and giving. Presents and festivities are only a portion of the holiday. It is about so much more than that, and we should always keep this in perspective. The holiday spirit can be a contagious thing, and we can try to spread it by treating one another as we should be treated.
