Interesting Hobbies That I Would Love To, But Don’t Do

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utica chapter.

I always say how I want a hobby, a creative hobby that lets me make something beautiful. I love scouring Etsy for all of the cute homemade trinkets of craftspeople who have turned their hobby into a business. Though I don’t plan on ever profiting off of a hobby, I do love making things, and I always think it would be fun to try. There are a few hobbies I would like to get involved with:

Soap/Candle Making

I love candles and soaps, especially pretty and nice smelling ones. This hobby seems so great because even if your completed project isn’t as beautiful as you want you can use it all up so it won’t be wasted. I have steered away from this hobby though, as I think it requires a lot of supplies, and it could be quite messy since I don’t know what I am doing. Still, this is one that I want to try in the future.

Knitting/Crocheting

Cute knitted or crocheted clothes are so popular, and I’d love to make something that I could wear. This hobby allows you to create clothes that match your exact style or make cute gifts for friends. I have tried to crochet, but I could only create a straight line. I think this hobby is difficult to learn on your own, as patterns and techniques are difficult to understand if there isn’t someone there to show you. I think I’d be willing to give crocheting another shot if I had a knowledgeable teacher.

Jewelry Making

Homemade jewelry can be so cute, and I love supporting artisans who make it. This hobby would be so awesome as you can make jewelry that suits your personality, make a piece that specifically matches your outfit, and if you have a sensitivity to certain metals this would be great for knowing exactly what a piece is made of. I feel this hobby is one I have avoided as I would not wear a piece I made if it didn’t turn out pretty, and I don’t want to be wasteful. I feel I could pick this up though if I learn the techniques and get the proper equipment so my pieces have the best chance of looking nice.

Photography

I am jealous of anyone who can take nice pictures. This hobby could be so great, I love to document events and special days with pictures, and if I took it up as a hobby those pictures could turn out so much better. Photography does require a lot of finding the perfect area at the perfect time to get the perfect shot, and I feel like I would be disappointed if my pictures didn’t turn out nice, so I haven’t picked up this hobby (and cameras are expensive). If I could learn to love the imperfections in pictures, I think this would be an awesome hobby to have.

I feel like there are so many awesome hobbies out there, and I am drawn to the creative output ones. I think all of the above hobbies are so cool, and I envy the people who do them and make it look easy. I hope one of the hobbies on this list piqued your interest, as I think more people should try these things. Someday, probably when I am less busy with school work, I will try to pick up at least one of the hobbies and be proud of my work.

I am a mathematics major at Utica college. On campus I am also a sister of Theta Phi Alpha sorority, a member of the honors program, and the math club.
