With election season rapidly approaching, it can be hard to focus on anything except the impending doom of who is going to be the next POTUS. However, it’s important to remember that local politics is just as, if not more, important than national politics. The local leaders you elect this year will make decisions that directly impact you for the next four years, so it’s important you stay informed on the issues.

Ben McAdams is the current House Representative for District 4 in Utah. He is a Democrat whose slogan is “People Over Party.” As a former University of Utah Student Body President and Mayor of Salt Lake County, Ben is more than qualified to continue leading Utah towards the future. Here are the top three reasons I’m voting for him.

Ben Listens to His Constituents

While researching Ben McAdams, I found that I disagreed with some of his voting choices. For example, I was incredibly annoyed that he voted against raising the minimum wage. The reason he did this, however, makes up for my disagreement. Ben feels passionately about doing what the people in his district want, even if it’s not what he wants. He takes his title of “representative” seriously.

Ben is also constantly having town hall meetings. He even had them be completely virtual, even pre-pandemic! Ben wants to reach as many people as he can to hear their voices and make sure he’s representing them well.

Ben Believes In Fiscal and Social Responsibility

Ben McAdams likes to market himself as an average dad, in that he’s always trying to find ways to save money for his family. He takes that same attitude into Congress. Ben wants to ensure that people get the social services they need in the most efficient way possible. For example, Ben supported providing loans to small businesses to help them with COVID-related financial problems, but he wanted to ensure that only small businesses that needed help got federal loans. He pressured Federal Treasury Secretary, Steve Mnuchin, to release who received loans from the Paycheck Protection Program. He believes that citizens should know how their tax money is being spent.

Ben Wants to Lower Healthcare Costs

COVID-19 has definitely showcased how broken our healthcare system is. After being hospitalized for COVID-19, Ben is more dedicated than ever to make sure everyone, even those with pre-existing conditions, get the medical care they need. Through fair price negotiation, Ben believes we can “lower individual health insurance premiums by 10 percent and extend health insurance coverage to an additional 4 million Americans.”

Ben McAdams is an average Utahn who wants to advocate for the average Utahn. He has a proven track record of representing his constituents and working for their best interests. Ballots go out in less than fifty days. I hope that when the time comes you’ll make the right decision and vote for Ben McAdams for Congress.
