Spooky SZN October Faves: Quarantine Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

Food:

I am always plugging Trader Joe’s, their Apple Cider Donuts, or the Cinnamon Rugelach are super dank!

Clothes:

Sweats/ loungewear are soooo in right now! Below are my top four picks of cozy/affordable items from places like Nastygal, Missguided, and Pacsun.

Makeup and skincare:

Since chapped lips are never in! I want to give a shout out to the  Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask- because it soothes and moisturizes and can be used as a chapstick! Kind of pricey but lasts a long time! Plus there are a variety of “flavors, “to choose from.

Movie and TV shows:

For those who want spooky/ scary options I have handpicked some available primarily on Netflix and Hulu:

Netflix:

The Autopsy of Jane Doe

Birdbox

As Above, So Below

Hush

Hulu:

Behind You

Wrinkles the Clown

Wounds

Awoken

*Disclaimer: I don’t get scared when watching movies easily, some of these are mostly jump scares but still might get you hiding under covers tonight!

Not scary but still in the Halloween spirit movies, also available on Hulu and Netflix:

Netflix:

The Adams Family

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Ratched (TV show)

The Adventures of Sabrina

Hulu:

Halloween Wars

Books:

For those who love to read and want to get into the spooky szn properly,  I would highly recommend “Things We Say In The Dark” by Kirsty Logan. It’s basically a collection of dark contemporary feminist stories, exploring the fears of women in the form of dark fairy tales to frightening ghost stories. If you are into dark tales and aren’t afraid of the dark- then this book might be for you! It is incredibly well written but very dark and graphic so be forewarned.

For my gals that prefer to avoid horror stories, I would highly recommend the book “Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert this month. I just finished it and just adored Gilbert’s style of writing, and overall varying themes. She talks all about self-discovery, love, mental health, peace, self-actualization, healing, spirituality/religion, and delicious food. These are all concepts that every human undergoes and actively thinks about, which is why I think everyone should read it at least once in their life. It is definitely an easy read, but will certainly make you think as we begin to dive into the holiday season.
