HC Utah’s Guide to Navigating “Singles Awareness Day”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

It’s no secret that Valentine’s Day is around the corner and while some may be singing, “Love is in the air…” others are leaning more towards “I am forever alone!” Either way there’s a rampage of emotions and thoughts probably going through your mind being single this Valentine’s Day but no need to fret! Her Campus is here to say you’re single and it’s okay! Here are some things you can do if you are riding solo this V-Day.

First off, you don’t need a significant other to show love on Valentine’s Day. Plan a nice lunch with friends or go “old school” and make a Valentine’s Day cards saying how much you appreciate and love your mom, dad, whoever!

Show a stranger some love! Okay, now before you get carried away I’m not asking you to find a random on the street and shower them with chocolate and confetti but definitely show kindness and love to those less fortunate. Did you know that on February 5th, the U is having an event in the Union Ballroom where anyone can drop by and make a card for a Primary Children’s hospital patient?

There’s nothing wrong with making someone else feel special, do a small deed for others and you’ll end up feeling better about yourself too.

Last but not least, do what makes you happy and don’t buy into the media hype. It may sound crazy but you don’t have to be in a relationship, look like a Victoria’s Secret model, or have lots of money to enjoy Valentine’s Day. Get in the spirit and wear something red or pink, or just something that makes you feel beautiful. Invite some friends or family over and go all out! Make dinner, dessert, and watch a romantic comedy to wrap up a great night.

Just be you this Valentine’s Day and remember: “To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance.”- Oscar Wilde
