Gilmore Girls Gets Real: How I Lived a Day in Stars Hollow

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

For those of you out there who are avid Gilmore Girls fans like myself, tune in. For those that may have no idea to what I’m referring, good news: you have exactly 51 days (including today) to watch all 7 seasons and become a certified Gilmore Girls Expert before *brand new* episodes arrive on Netflix for the first time since the show went off the air in 2007. Gilmore Girls is not just some show. In the words of Lorelai Gilmore herself, “it’s a lifestyle”.

Yesterday, Wednesday October 5th, Netflix turned over 200 coffee shops throughout the United States into Luke’s Diner for one day, and one day only. Fans everywhere flocked to the nearest coffee shop that was in on the deal. Fortunately, Utah had two locations in which to join in on the Gilmore fun. I drove over to Higher Ground Coffee, located at 2005 E. 3300 S. for my cup of Luke’s infamous coffee.

Braving the wind and the rain, I stood in line with a hundred or so other fans for about 40 minutes before being able to place my order. Unfortunately, the blue customized Luke’s coffee sleeves had run out long before I got my cup. However, each cup came stamped with the quote from Lorelai, “Coffee please. And a shot of cynicism” from Season 1, Episode 16. There was a Luke’s sign on the window out front to signal this was the place to be.

Conversations overheard in line consisted of how far each individual drove to get here; someone drove 40 minutes in rain from Orem, to how to celebrate the new episodes being released. There were fans of all ages both young and old, including couples experiencing this day together, as well as young families with small children. Baristas donned Luke’s signature hat, backwards of course, ready to assist customers. Every cell phone was out, taking selfies with the sign outside, posting to social media, all contributing to the mass phenomenon that is Gilmore Girls. Ironic seeing as how Luke is so passionate with his hate towards cell phones!

Thank you Netflix, for inviting us all into the world of Stars Hollow, Connecticut for a day. Unfortunately, I did not take the photo of the real Luke (Scott Patterson) surprising fans yesterday, as this occurred in LA. Lucky fans! This was such a unique experience to take part in, one that took the entire nation by storm. Yesterday Netflix made fan history, one cup of Joe at a time.
