Fall is full of smells, colors and change. It really is such an inspiring time of the year. One of my favorite things to do on a cool fall afternoon is snuggle up with hot tea and read beautiful rhthmic poetry. During the break I hope you enjoy your downtime and can snuggle up to these poems. Some were written by our very own University of Utah creative writing students as well as classic poets!

Foam lips

The breeze may be brisk

And the leaves are slowly dying

But I’m cozier than the foam that kisses your lips

Drenched in black

From knee high boots to floppy hat

Your dark roast lid stained with my red kiss

The leaves are falling

Uncontrolled by gravity

Like I am falling

Uncontrollably for you

-Krissi Karren

Season change

Cool, Sweet air hits my lungs

And the wind softly howls

My thoughts become lost in my memories

Jumping in mountains of dry crunchy firing leaves

Season’s change, we become older

Almost wiser, although never smarter

Atumn love

As the light glimmers through the tall green trees

I dwell about how we could be an us

Looking up to enjoy my walk with ease

Listening to the wind and leaves discuss

Red brick coffee shops holding your secrets

While I confide in rich chocolate chips

Your lingering promises leave me sleepless

Your matted hair sticking to your soft lips

Crave your permanence like my tattooed moon

I continue my day with tired eyes

I’m a perfect fit as your little Spoon

Your smile sweeter than cherry pies

Your laugh takes me up to the Milky Way

All I could ask is if you will please stay

Spacey dazed beauty

Oh spacey dazed beauty what could you possibly be thinking about?

Are you thinking about sleeping on the fluffiest of clouds or howling at the moon?

Or how about the scar on your arm that sends chills up your spine?

Whatever may be entering your thoughts please don’t dismay me.

I am here for you to see broadways in the stars

To make you dance in a rainstorm

I am the exploding of corals, plums, seaside blues, dreary grays and sunray yellows

I am capable of taking you beyond this universe to galaxies where sparkling elephants play

Make your words dance the tango on a lonesome page

Write them until the dull pain in your hand becomes numb.

Oh my spacey dazy beauty, together you and I could be invincible

– Krissi Karren

October’s Party

October gave a party; The leaves by hundreds came–The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples,And leaves of every name. The Sunshine spread a carpet,And everything was grand,Miss Weather led the dancing,

Professor Wind the band. The Chestnuts came in yellow,The Oaks in crimson dressed; The lovely Misses MapleIn scarlet looked their best; All balanced to their partners,And gaily fluttered by;The sight was like a rainbowNew fallen from the sky.

Then, in the rustic hollow,At hide-and-seek they played,The party closed at sundown,And everybody stayed.Professor Wind played louder; They flew along the ground; And then the party endedIn jolly “hands around.”

-George Cooper

Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Krissi attends the University of Utah studying to become a journalist. When she is not doing school work, she is a part time makeup artist, full time animal lover and spends any moment she can outside. (She especially loves outdoor malls.) She quotes: "Writing is one of the most beautiful ways to express ourselves and I could not be more thrilled to be apart of Her Campus!"
