Complaining About Our Newly Elected President Won’t Do Sh*t

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

After this past year of watching the debates, doing hours of research, and trusting the process, I have never been so shocked in my life before – this year’s election really has changed my point of view on politics, religion, and just my life in general.

I have been taught by society that these two candidates (Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton) had their talents that made them more likable and respectable, along with their flaws where I would see the endless FB and Twitter rants about their problems and views. All of the different information and research that was thrown at me recently really made me think about who I was politically as a person and how I wanted everyone to hear my voice on how I believed this country could grow. I can honestly say from the bottom of my heart that I was a Trump supporter in the beginning, but I kept my mouth shut because of all the bitterness and stereotypes that were thrown at people who believed in “making America great again”. I remember I would lie to my friends and pretend that I hated Trump just so I would not be roasted because, I will admit, I wasn’t sure about how he really was going to change America at the time, I just grew up Republican, so I was bound to go for the Republican Party. Now, looking back these past few months on different views coming out, policies, campaigns, etc, I still had the same beliefs that Trump stands for, however, still disagreeing with how he approaches his personality and views. I started leaning towards Hillary Clinton socially and explored her different campaigns that she posted and presented around the country, but deep down, I thought I was still a Trump supporter, but after learning more about who they both were more personally, I started to not support either of them – I was going to claim myself as an independent because I was just so confused on my political views. Then I started to realize that voting is having your own voice and not just a piece of paper so when I got my ballot two weeks ago, I voted (I’m not going to say who I voted for), but I knew that I made the right decision.

Watching this year’s election and seeing how damn close the polls were and reading all of the savage tweets that I saw on Twitter from different sides of the spectrum, I realized that I honestly did not care who would win the election because in the end, it all depends on what they actually end up doing. Actions do speak louder than words, and I am a firm believer in that. Seeing Trump win the election was not the most exciting thing to see, but what the hell are we going to do about it? Rioting and starting social media rants about how Trump should be impeached and how he doesn’t deserve to represent our country is not going to do anything. People may not have the fondest views of our new president, but it really irks me with all of these hateful comments. He is now representing our country and he still deserves the respect that we owe him no matter what he has done. Like I said, all we can do at this point is sit back and see what he does when he gets sworn into office in January and let the universe take its course. Complaining about how America is over and how we should all die instead does NOT help our country whatsoever.

While we are shocked that Donald Trump has won this election, there are millions of people who wanted him to win from the get-go. We now have to stand behind our country and make sure Trump does what he has to do what he believes is best for our country.
