4 Things To Do If You’re Staying Home For Fall Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

Ah Fall break, what every college student yearns for,  a week off from school where one can get away from the dreariness of exams and homework. However, going away for the a week as college student can often be expensive, and that money was much better spent on that textbook you never use anyway. Let’s face it though, no one wants to fall into the toxic cycle of napping, and enviously scrolling through other people’s happy instagram photos. Here are four ways to keep yourself from becoming a self pitting couch potato this fall break.

1. Be tourist in your city and take photos

Disposable cameras, once popular among small children are now a cheap way for your adult self to take vintage photos. Take a stroll downtown and absorb all of the little parts of Salt Lake that make it different than any other place. Walk through Trolley Square or simply drive up to the capitol and look at city below. Resurrect your nerdy 2013 hipster self, she is not dead, take photos in 35mm.

2. Go Thrifting

Perhaps you’re still trying to save money, but that shouldn’t stop you from viewing relics from the past. Salt Lake is the home to several amazing thrift stores and antique shops such as Decades or even The Goodwill. Set out to find the most ridiculous pair of 50s heels or the creepiest looking porcelain doll. Many thrift stores carry vintage magazines that can be used to make collages, moodboards, or other types of art. Moreover, find an outfit from the internet and try to recreate using pieces that you find.

3. Hang out at a Patio

Anyone who has experienced Utah weather can attest to the fact that the fall fades into winter too quickly, so take this time to visit all of the beautiful patio Salt Lake City has to offer. Coffee shop patios have always fascinated me in particular. There seems to be an understanding that if one is seated outside they are more welcome to conversation. Personally, I have had many strange encounters and conversations that have taken place on patio. Perhaps you will find a new friend.

4. Take yourself on a date

These days people really like to spout a lot of hoop-lah about self love, but why not take it to text level and actually take yourself out on a date. Regardless of whether or not you are single, it’s fun to get dolled up and go out. I highly encourage everyone to put on their favorite dress and take themselves out to their favorite restaurant to dinner and go see the movie no one wants to see with you. Bring a book for entertainment or simply people watch. It might be frightening, but there is power and being able to be alone.
