10 Netflix Series to Binge Watch During Winter Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

Winter break is a time for long walks downtown, enjoying the Christmas lights with your hot date. It’s a time when you’re curled up by the fireplace drinking hot cocoa. It’s when you go skiing, sledding, snowboarding, and tubing with your best friends. Winter break is also the perfect time to grab your trashiest snacks, pulling on your polar bear onesie, and getting cozy to watch all the shows on Netflix. Scrolling means wasting your break. Here are some fantastic shows you can binge watch throughout your whole break!

1. Atypical

In this quirky eight episode drama, Keir Gilchrist portrays Sam, an 18-year-old with autism. Sam wants to start dating, and goes on a journey to find out how to connect and communicate with others. If you don’t want to ruin your life binge watching a show with 100 seasons, this is a perfect one to start out with. Bonus: The soundtrack is a banger.

2. Big Mouth

You’ve probably seen this show on Netflix, but scrolled past it, thinking it was for kids. Hell no. It’s an adult dark comedy based on Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg’s tween years. This slightly—maybe really vulgar–show is about two tweens, and their friends going through puberty and experiencing their first sexual urges. It’s weird, like really weird, but if you’re needing some awkward laughter in your life, this is the show to watch. Bonus: There’s a star-studded voice cast.

3. Stranger Things

Did you think I was going to forget to mention this show? Maybe you’ve already watched this (I wouldn’t be surprised), but nonetheless this is too good of a show to not binge watch. The second season came out a month ago so if you finish the first season on a cliffhanger, you know where to go next. Set in the 80s, it’s about Will Byers going missing due to supernatural reasons and his three friends searching for him. They recruit a girl with psychokinetic powers along the way who help them with their quest. This show will have you hanging on to your knickers. Bonus: Steve Harrington becomes a mom in the second season.

4. Black Mirror

Inspired by shows like The Twilight Zone, this series is sci-fi, satire, and thriller all combines into one. Each episode tells a different story. I can’t really explain this one in full detail, you’ll just have to watch it to understand the hype. Some episodes can be disturbing and confusing, but I guarantee you, you won’t be bored for a second. It has a  “this could be your reality, and it’s terrifying,” feel to it.

5. Sherlock

Based off of Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are cast as Sherlock and Doctor John Watson. If you’re familiar with the Sherlock Holmes, there should be no explanation needed. They solve crimes with Sherlock’s impeccable observation skills and Watson’s doctor-y skills. If you’re into mystery/crime dramas, this show is the perfect one for you. Bonus: It’s co-produced by Steven Moffat (Doctor Who, anyone?)

6. The Seven Deadly Sins

Call me a weeb, but this anime is a must watch. Adapted from the manga, Meliodas and Elizabeth go on a journey to find his old band of knights in order to overthrow the current Kingdom Liones. And the best part–it’s bone-tickling hilarious.

7. Hater’s Back Off!

Miranda Sings, YouTube’s biggest star, starts from the bottom and fights her way to fame on YouTube. Her journey is not without bumps and turns, but that’s all part of the fun. You might think this show is annoying if you don’t know the YouTube character, but if you are already a subscriber, you are going to enjoy Miranda’s overconfident attitude and actions. And with Angela Kinsey starring in the series..I’m in.

8. Reign

This story follows Mary, Queen of Scots in her early years. Of course, this is highly fictionalized, but it’s still very entertaining and thrilling to watch. If you like cute guys, fancy dresses, and steamy romances then please binge this series.

9. New Girl

Honestly, I haven’t watched past season 1 yet, but according to my friends, this is a good one to binge. It’s an ongoing series, and though the sixth season isn’t on Netflix yet, five seasons should keep you going for a while. For a brief synopsis, after getting cheated on, Jess finds an ad on Craigslist and moves into an apartment with three other guys. It’s funny, romantic, and little wacky. Of course, Zooey Deschanel is also a goddess.

H2O: Just Add Water

My childhood show that I still watch on the regular. Three girls find themselves stranded on Mako Island after their boat stops running. They stumble across a secret cave, and end up in a pool right under a full moon. After returning to land, they discover that if they touch water, they turn into mermaids. Oh, and they each have a superpower. It’s an all around wholesome show with difficult situations and perfect villains.

There you go! Ten shows last you through winter break without having to get off the couch. Enjoy your winter break, and happy binge-watching!
