Dear Freshman Me,

Congratulations on finally deciding on a school and major! It seemed like it took forever compared to other people, and for some reason, you still have doubts. That’s natural though.

Take a deep breath. I know you’re terrified, but it’s okay. You’re not alone, even though you may feel that way. Soon enough, you will be surrounded by friends. Don’t be afraid to talk to people. I promise they are friendlier than anything you are imagining. It’s also okay to be alone at times. In fact, you will crave the isolation every so often. Sharing a bedroom with someone for nine month is not going to be fun all the time, but don’t take it out on your roomie. You know she is pretty amazing after all.

Don’t worry too much about that failed diagnostics test. Or the nine books you have to read. Or the fifteen page paper due at the end of the semester. You’re in the class to learn that information, and things will be better by the end. Don’t worry too much about debt either. Or the future, for that matter. Really though, you will be worrying a lot. Try not to though. A little is good, but don’t let it get in the way of being happy.

It’s easy to try to ignore the stress by going out a lot, but remember you are here for a reason. It’s to learn, to grow. To become the person you hope to be. Along those lines, don’t forget to set some time aside to have fun. College isn’t anything without the experiences you make. Do something crazy. Travel somewhere you have never been before. Move out of your comfort zone. Yes, it’s supposed to be uncomfortable but in the best way. Remember: “Feel the fear, and do it anyway.” You will be glad you went out with your friends to the club, even if it’s just to experience it. Or bungee-jumping. Or on that road trip across the country—the first time you went on a trip without your family.

Speaking of, don’t forget about your family. They can be insane, and I know you are glad to get away sometimes; however, show that you appreciate how much they care about you. When they call, have a real conversation. If they send you a care package, say thank you. Now, don’t get homesick on me—at least not too much. It’s inevitable, but remember you will see them in just a few short months. I promise the time will fly.

Best of luck with your UT adventure. I know you don’t regret it.

Love,

Spring 2016 Me

Hi, I'm Chanel. I'm a Sophomore at the University of Tampa with a major in Public Health. I laugh at horror movies, don't understand romantic movies, and cry during documentaries. I am vegetarian, but I will make an exception for pepperoni pizza rolls because the plain cheese are just plan disgusting. I dream of owning a cuddly pet chicken and a tiny home. Hm... I also enjoy torturing myself by spending an hour and half in a 105 degree room to practice Bikram Yoga. That is all.
