Summer Made Simple: 3 Ingredient Margarita

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USFCA chapter.

One classic drink, three super simple ingredients, and so much summer fun to be had! This margarita recipe is a real game changer, and seriously better than the over priced drinks at most restaurants. Whenever my friends and I do taco night, this is the perfect beverage! This margarita is super simple, made with grocery store ingredients, without all the extra bits like grand marnier or triple sec. These other liquors can get expensive if they are something you may not regularly use, or you may not have the space in your apartment for a bar! If you are a bigger fan of frozen margarita or flavored margaritas (mango, strawberry), consider adapting this recipe by adding crushed ice or flavored syrup/juice/fresh fruits.

Ingredients:

Cocktail shaker (or glass + fork)

Salt

1 Lime, juiced

1 or 1.5 shots (around 2 oz.) Silver Tequila

Dash of agave or simple syrup (agave preferred, you can DIY simple syrup from sugar though)

Plenty of ice

Optional: lime garnish

Assembly

  1. Open your cocktail shaker and put in fresh ice. Then, pour in your lime juice, tequila and dash of agave. Close the shaker, and shake til combined and chilled. If using a glass and fork instead of a cocktail shaker, simply move the fork around vigorously to achieve a similar effect.

  2. On the side, have a rocks glass dipped in salt. My favorite trick for this is to use the lime rind to moisten the glass edge before dipping. Put a few pieces of fresh ice into the rocks glass.

  3. Strain the cocktail shaker into the salted rocks glass. Optional: garnish with a lime on the rim!

This recipe can also be combined with juices or nectars – like mango nectar or strawberry lemonade – for expanded flavor options. Sometimes if limes are expensive I will use store-bought limeade. Just be aware that lots of juices have added sugar and may be sweet enough to reduce the amount of agave in the drink.

That is it! Three ingredients, three steps, one perfect summer drink! This recipe is totally adjustable, and can be customized to your liking. If you would like a sweeter drink, add more agave or lime, or if you would like a stronger drink add more tequila or cut back on lime.

Cheers ladies! Salud!
