How Twilight Changed Pop Culture

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USFCA chapter.

Do you remember when the first Twilight movie came out? You were camping out in theaters, wearing your Team Edward/Jacob T-shirts, and anticipating for the clock to finally hit midnight to watch the movie all teens around the world have been waiting for. That’s when it all started: the twilight phenomena.

What really stunned the media was when Hot Topic attempted to hold a book-signing event back in 2008 at the San Francisco Stonestown Galleria where Robert Pattinson was supposed to make an appearance. Around 500 people were expected to line up, but thousands showed up. Police were forced to cancel the event after the crowds of obsessed teen girls grew out of control. As years passed, the Twilight Phenomena has created a vampire culture.

Stephanie Myer, author of the Twilight Saga, is the person who created this made-up gorgeous vampire, Edward Cullen, which many girls and women across the world fell helplessly in love with. Edward Cullen was the epitome of every girl’s dream man: mysterious, protective, sensitive, gorgeous, and the list goes on! His character is the main cause for the creation of the twilighters.

TV Shows
Twilight has gained some competition over the past few years when True Blood and The Vampire Diaries hit television! Now, the obsession isn’t only with Edward Cullen or Jacob Black from Twilight. Other vampires and werewolves have taken over their throne such as Damon Salvatore from the Vampire Diaries or Eric Northman from True Blood.

Vampire Vineyards
Yes, the Vampire Vineyards do exist. This company created a series of wines for the vampire enthusiasts out there. They also have “Vampyre Vodka,” which is colored to look like blood. Find this a little too much? In addition, The Vampire Vineyards have created a series of coffee, chocolate, and even vampy energy drinks for bloodthirsty fans to buy.

Fashion
From gorgeous jewelry to stylish handbags, Twilight has created a new fashion statement. The Team Edward and Team Jacob Tees were a huge hit and now, in honor of Breaking Dawn, the Twilight merchandise has included Bella’s wedding ring for everyone to buy at Hot Topic.  Even a “Twilight” clothing line was released in October 2009 at Nordstrom! The line included a Cullen crest charm necklace, tank tops, graphic tees, and jackets!

From television to bottles of wine, Twilight has definitely started a revolution of hardcore vampire fans all over the world. Twilight has changed the lives of many, as well as pop culture forever.

Coming across Her Campus as a senior in high school and then leading her very own branch, Emily proudly calls herself the co-president and editor-in-chief of Her Campus University of San Francisco. While Emily has a guilty addiction to shopping, celebrities, and all things "girly" she hopes that she can integrate this into a relatable magazine to the women of her campus. Emily has a slight infatuation for John Krasinski and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. When she's not day dreaming about her future husbands, Emily is participating in many extra curricular activities such as her sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta. Emily enjoys good company, good FOOD, and a good ole' television. One of the most recent television series Emily has become a fan of is ABC's Pan Am. If only Pan Am continued to exist, Emily would have seriously considered becoming a stewardess. The success of the branch has yet to blossom. Emily hopes that she can bring Her Campus University of San Francisco to its full potential. In the future, Emily plans studying abroad all over the European continent and pursue her passion of social justice through fashion.
