What To Do With All This Summer?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

Because school is out for a few months, it can be easy to get in the routine of relaxing at home or sleeping in until noon. Not having to be up for class at 8 a.m. is a wonderful thing, and being able to sleep in a little isn’t a crime. But after a few weeks you really feel like you’re missing out on your break and if you continue to lounge your days away, school will have started again before you know it. The way I keep myself from falling into the trap of becoming a couch potato is to make a summer bucket list and try to check off as many things as I can before the fall semester rolls around!

The best way to make a bucket list is to make sure it’s composed of things you want to do, but know you actually have the ability to do. Most of us would like to travel the world, but maybe that’s just not a realistic goal for this summer. Add it to your “25 before 25” bucket list! There’s no reason to think you’ll never get it done, but if you fill your list with things that most likely won’t happen, chances are you’ll end up staying home and get none of the things you wanted to get done crossed off.

Start off easy with something like trips to the beach, reading that book you’ve been looking at in the park or taking a dance class and go from there!

Since school has been out, I’ve been able to cross many tasks off of my bucket list, some even two and three times. I’ve done the beach, read two great books, cleaned out my closet and even made a day trip to Orlando with some of my friends.

Next on my list is taking a trip up to St. Augustine. I love that downtown is so modern and lit up beautifully at night, but there are still areas with the oldest schools and buildings in the country. Not to mention, the beach is a few minutes away!

I love Disney, but I have neglected the thrill ride filled Busch Gardens for far too long. It’s practically in my backyard and it’s much cheaper than Universal. More roller coasters means less small children and thus, more time enjoying yourself without having to worry about strollers. Often during the summer, Busch Gardens has special summer night happenings, concerts and food festivals! The park is open later and they even do firework shows.

The beach is great, but it can become overdone very quickly. I love visiting the gardens at the Ringling Museum in Sarasota. In addition to the beautiful Banyan trees and amazing 63-acre garden, the museum hosts an extensive collection of art, a Ringling Brothers museum and even a tour of the Ringling family estate. The Ringling Museum is also one of only two places in the world with a true-to-size replica of Michelangelo’s David.

This is just a sampling of my summer bucket list, which is constantly growing! The great thing about making a bucket list full of easy to attain tasks is that you can continue to check things off once school starts again! So get up and get going collegiettes™! The summer is here and yours to conquer!
