Throwback Thursday: Our Favorite Snacks From The 90’s That Kids These Days Don’t Even Recognize

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

As a nanny of a 6 year old and 8 year old, I have found myself in conversations with the kids where I begin to think, “Wow, I am actually old”. It starts with the music. I ask if they have been to a concert yet and the conversation leads to me telling them my first concert was when I was in second grade 15 years ago and saw The Backstreet Boys. The children make it clear that they have never heard about The Backstreet Boys and it is now all about Ariana Grande and 5 Seconds to Summer.

The conversation turns from music to the candies we enjoy as we are walking through a 7-11 getting slurpees when I bring up Dunkaroos. I am once again told that the kids have never heard of Dunkaroos, but they sound disgusting and would much rather snack on a Nerd Rope.

This conversation about Dunkaroos got me thinking about all of the delicious glorious snacks that were around in the 90’s.

1. My favorite: Dunkaroos. Nothing will ever compare to dipping a kangaroo cookie into a pool of vanilla frosting. Unfortunately, Dunkaroos are discontinued and we will have to cherish the moments we had with our favorite Kangaroo from the 90’s.

2. Push Pops. Push Pops were awesome because they gave us a way to enjoy a lollipop, but we were able to save whatever portion we didn’t eat at the time for later. Luckily I have recently found Push Pops at Candy Kitchen on Maderia Beach.

3. 3D Doritos. As if regular Doritos weren’t delicious enough, the brand decided to make them into puffs and package them in cups so they were convenient to take in our lunches.

4. Another favorite of mine: Nestle Wonder Ball. Please tell me who doesn’t like the idea of a chocolate ball with a toy in the middle??? Too add to the excitement of the Wonder Ball, Nestle had the bright idea to feature different cartoons on the snack. This led to getting a Wonder Ball featuring Spongebob, Winnie the Pooh, Toy Story, and Pokemon. Sadly, Wonder Balls were discontinued right before the millennia because of apparent choking hazards that were associated with the toy inside.

RIP snacks of the 90’s, you are missed.
