Sasha Cameron: Meet A USF Her Campus Member

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

Sasha Cameron is a seasoned student at USF as a double major 5th year senior. She is extremely involved in the USF community, participating in many clubs and organizations. From her hometown of Fort Lauderdale, FL, she originally chose USF for the 5-year master’s program in architecture, but later switched to international studies and then added mass communications to compliment it.

It was a lasting impression from studying the Japanese culture in high school that further drew her to switch her major to international studies, specifically the Asian study certificate. Sasha is known for her love of all things Asian whether it is the food, the people or even martial arts. One thing Sasha feels is unique about her is being one of few girls learning Southeast martial arts. Among some friends, she is even known by her nick name “Sushi.” She has become involved in several Asian clubs though out USF such as, The Association of Filipino Students (AFS), The Korean American Student Association (KASA) and The Japanese Club (J-Club), just to name a few. Through these clubs, she has made many friends while expanding her knowledge about the Asian culture. Taking her involvement with AFS to another level, Sasha is also a part of the AFS dance team which is known for their hip-hop and cultural dances. The team is currently focusing on their next competition “Def Talent Jam” also known as DTJ.

As a compliment to her international studies degree, her second degree is in mass communications with the public relations sequence. This degree has lead her to her involvement with USF’s division of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and Her Campus. She became a part of these groups to show future employers her abilities in writing and public affairs. This past summer, she took on a communications internship in Washington, D.C. with a financial trade group to further her experience in public relations. The internship was through a program called The Washington Center. The program sent her résumé to many agencies including campaigning agencies and in the end, the financial trade group internship was what she found to fit her best.

“I loved the fact that I got to go to hearings in the senate and congress. I also loved all the people that I met through my internship and through the networking events that I went to,” Sasha said.

Now, she has a local internship as a communications assistant for FLATE, located in HCC’s Brandon Campus. She choose this internship because she thought it will give her the most experience that she needed in her last semester at USF, and she wanted to have an internship that would give her opportunities and be impressive to future employers.

Even though it may seem impossible to do all that Sasha does, and still have time for sleep and homework, she manages to create time for everything. She says her secret is time management, which she learned her freshman year when her grades started slipping as her club involvement increased. In the small chance that Sasha gets a little bit of down time, she likes to unwind with a good shower and watch movies or Korean dramas. Sasha looks forward to graduating from USF and finally start a new chapter of her life in the “real world.” She plans to take all of her experience from both of her degrees and internships, as well as everything she has learned from the many clubs she has been involved in and start her career as a public affairs officer in Washington, D.C.
