Presentation Confidential

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

Many courses in college want you to do presentations as part of your grade for the class . Presentations can seem scary, but in reality they are not. Presentations are simply a visual help to what you already know.  It is also a great way to organize your thoughts while presenting. Here are some tips that can get you ready for one in no time.

1.      Speech: We all get nervous at times but this is the one time that you can’t fumble over your words. Try not to say “um” or “like” too much as it will cause your classmates and professor to groan. Try to practice your speech the night before so that you can be clear and concise when you present. Don’t drink coffee right before. Trust me.  I had a friend who drank coffee right before her presentation and she was too jittery to speak. Try to have note cards in your hand so that you can look down at them when you need to remember the next point.

2.      Dress appropriately: When doing a presentation, dress business casual at the very least. This shows your professor that you serious about your presentation and leaves a good impression.

3.      Content Slides: Slides are there to help you but not do the work for you. Put only your key notes on each slide. Explain each note when speaking as this will capture the attention of your audience and not your Powerpoint.

4.      Cover/Design: make sure the words on the PowerPoint can be seen. Don’t do white text on black or do your PowerPoint with contrasting colors, not only does it distract the audience but it is also very hard to read. The easier it is to read the slides, the easier the presentation will go. When in doubt use a light background with black lettering. I find that the download-ready templates for Microsoft are put together nicely and can make your presentation stand out. When in doubt keep it simple.

5.      Layout: Having trouble organizing your PowerPoint? Make sure you have a title page, categorize each topic that you need to talk about then include a conclusion. Use photos and charts to help make your point. If you include a video, make sure you have the video on the same computer as your PowerPoint, otherwise it will not work.

Just remember to be confident in your presentation. You will do well. I have full confidence in you, Her Campus Reader!
