Nerdgasm: The Sexiest Characters in Science Fiction

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

As we draw closer to the end of the semester, our minds begin to wander. We cannot pay attention in class any longer, and we certainly cannot read or write lengthy blog posts on a serious subject.

This week I’ve decided to move away from all that and write about something silly and fun.

Which science fiction/fantasy character do you find sexiest?

I received dozens of answers to this question on my Facebook account and even more from people I spoke with on campus. I was shocked at some of the nominations I received. I bet you will be too.

Ready? Let’s count them down…

10. Padmé Amidala
Padme, first portrayed in Star Wars: Episode I- The Phantom Menace by the then eighteen year-old Natalie Portaman, belongs higher on this list in my opinion. Unlike many female science fiction characters, Padme radiates a natural beauty that doesn’t require an absence of clothes to attract fans.

9. Angel
Of course, there had to be one vampire on this list. I’m just glad it wasn’t a glittery one. Played by David Boreanaz in Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer and later Angel, this one definitely deserves to be on the sexy list. He has the dark, brooding, mysterious thing really working for him. As I’m sure you know, this picture isn’t actually of David playing Angel. But really, is anyone going to complain?

8. Inara Serra
Inara got quite a few votes, though perhaps not as many as you’d expect if you knew her profession. Morena Baccarin plays Inara in Joss Whedon’s best creation, Firefly. Inara, like Padme, brings natural beauty to the table. Of course, she also happens to be a trained expert in the bedroom.

7. Han Solo
First crush, anyone? Portrayed by Harrison Ford in the original Star Wars trilogy, Han was a scruffy, sarcastic, amazingly talented pilot with an adorably crooked smile. I think it’s funny that both he and his daughter made it onto this list, but not Leia. What about Luke? Sorry. No one thought he was hot. No one.

6. Amy Pond
Amy Pond, a companion of the eleventh reincarnation of the Doctor in Doctor Who, is the “girl next door” of the list. Her flaming hair, intelligence, and vibrant personality make her both sexy and amiable.

5. Rick O’Connell
Regardless of the character he’s playing, Brendan Fraser is always gorgeous, but there’s just something about Rick O’Connell. The hero in The Mummy and its sequels, we just love watching him sling those guns and jump through fire to rescue Evy. We especially love that he does it while covered in baby oil with his shirt unbuttoned…

4. Quorra
A lot of people have told me that they don’t find Olivia Wilde attractive. To these loonies I have to respond “What’s wrong with you?!” She plays Quorra in Tron: Legacy, and I’ve never seen anyone make a leather bodysuit look better. She’s flawless, and Quorra is the coolest character in the film.

3. The Tenth Doctor
Okay, personally I don’t see the attraction in this one, but he only lost the winning spot by one vote. David Tennant plays the tenth reincarnation of the Doctor in Doctor Who. What’s so sexy here? Maybe it’s the tousled hair, the accent. Why don’t you guys tell me?

2. Leeloo
Leeloo is Milla Jovovich’s character in The Fifth Element. Created by Earth scientists to be the human embodiment of the fifth element, Leeloo is a perfect being, a fact no one can miss with that little white one-piece she wears. By the way, how come no one nominated Milla as Alice?

1. Malcolm Reynolds
Ahhh! (That was my girly giggle-squeal) Malcolm Reynolds, the captain of the ship Serenity in Firefly, is about as sexy as it gets in nerdville. He’s definitely my nerdgasm. Haunted by his past but played by the adorably buoyant Nathan Fillion, Mal is both mysterious and funny, A diehard fan, I can’t imagine anyone else playing Mal. However I just found out that the role was actually intended for Nicholas Brendan, who plays Xander in Buffy. Eww!

Well, I hope you guys liked the countdown. Remember, these votes came from my Facebook readers and USF classmates. I think this was a fun post to write. We should do it again. Maybe next time we can count down the cutest scifi couples. Mal and Inara? New Spock and Uhura?
