Mustaches, Flash Mobs and Proposals

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

You have dreamt about it all your life. You wonder where and how it will happen. You can only dream of the day when your boyfriend gets down on one knee. Since it is the 21st century, proposing has been taken up a notch. There are videos all over YouTube and even a show called “Mobbed” where we see women be proposed to not only by her husband-to-be but by all of her friends and family too in the style of a flash mob. For one woman, April Sager, this became a reality at University of South Florida.

April Sager and David Betsch met at a conference in 2005. They hit it off because they had something in common. April went to USF and was then working at UWF, and David when to UWF and was then working at USF. They were able to interact a couple of times through their jobs, but it was the last couple of years when they really became close. Although, David likes to tell the story that he knew April was the one in 2005. David and April are currently doing a long-distance relationship due to work. David now works at Coastal Carolina University and April works here at USF. Because they are both incredibly passionate about their careers, they make the long-distance work.

When April stepped into the Marshall Student Center that day she had no clue that the people lined up with paper hearts and the spectators on the stairs had all been waiting for her:“I was honestly very overwhelmed at first since there was this never ending line of people handing me hearts. At some point it did occur to me that he might be proposing since no one would tell me anything, they just smiled and handed me a heart.”

As the flash mob broke out April began to have ideas run through her head. They had plans to eat lunch in MSC that day… but lunch turned into a proposal. All of David and April’s friends knew what was going on that afternoon, but what was even crazier was that the same day April had planned a mustache-themed surprise birthday party for David. She had planned on ditching lunch with him in MSC to set up his party but luckily her friends got her there anyways… she almost missed her own proposal!

Needless to say, her friends were all very exhausted from keeping all those secrets from April and David and trying to pull off a proposal and surprise birthday party on the same day! April says, “They refer to that day as the “web of lies” they had to spin in order to keep both of our secrets from one another.”

Another fairytale detail about this beautiful proposal is that when April attended USF as a student she practically lived in the old MSC building. She was in MSC every day and only left to attend classes. Since then MSC has been remodeled and it hasn’t felt the same for April. “Now the new MSC holds new meaning to me and will forever be in my life filled with new memories of this next chapter.”
