Fighting for an Education: Malala’s Story

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

By now a lot of you may have heard about Malala Yousafzai, the 15 year old girl who was brutally gunned down and shot in the head by a member of the Taliban in Pakistan for advocating and desiring an education. For someone so young Malala has been very courageous in her crusade for equal opportunities in education, and just three years prior she worked with the BBC where she wrote a diary chronicling life under the Taliban. The Taliban saw Malala as a threat as they believed she was spreading and propagating western ideals that went against their views. Malala’s story and undeniable strength has touched so many, even actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie who wrote an article about Malala for The Daily Beast. Jolie’s article was touching as she wrote how she explained to her children about Malala and her brave display as she stood up for what she believed in. In the article Jolie explained how her children questioned why these men felt the need to try to kill Malala and Jolie responded with this, “because an education is a powerful thing.”

Malala’s action have definitely sparked a revolution, and the seeds of her determination and passion are just starting to sprout and take root as the Pakistani government has been very vigilant in bringing justice to Malala and acknowledging the right to education for the women of their country, which is a huge victory. Malala’s story is an inspiring one as well as a moving story. Upon hearing Malala’s story I was reminded of the many freedoms, liberties and opportunities that I am afforded living here in America that many can only dream of. Many times we here in America often take for granted our good fortune and freedoms, so I hope that the story of Malala and her bravery not only inspire many but also let us reflect and appreciate the liberties we are afforded and often take for granted.

As for Malala she was rushed to a hospital in the UK and currently has been making promising progress and should have a steady recovery. Also according to the Huffington Post the world will celebrate Malala Day on November 10th to honor Malala who represents and has become the voice for the 61 million children who are denied an education.
