FASHION FRIDAY: VMA Red Carpet Report Card

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

Celebrities hold nothing back when it comes to the MTV Video Music Awards. Not only are shocking performances absolutely expected (Miley’s twerking ring a bell?), but crazy, over-the-top fashion is highly encouraged. I’m happy to say this year did not disappoint.

In honor of pushing the fashion envelope, here are some of our most beloved celebs’ VMA fashion report card grades.

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga’s black mess of a dress was pretty tame for the woman who is famous for her outrageous fashion. Even though the trash bag-esque material is strange, the neckline of this Prabal Gurung gown is uber flattering on Gaga’s décolletage (holy clavicles!). The sparkly train looks misplaced and her black wig is reminiscent of Elvira, but this outfit fits right in with Gaga’s well-known style aesthetic.

Grade: B+

Taylor Swift

What a siren! Although the outfit is a little formal for the occasion, Taylor is on point in this Hervé Léger by Max Azria gown. The plunging neckline and skintight bandage-style dress proves that her sweetheart image is a thing of the past, but the 50’s inspired hair and long length of the gown still fit flawlessly with Taylor’s characteristic classic style. Her smoky eyes and red lips create a seriously sultry look that polishes off her glamorous ensemble.

Grade: A-

Selena Gomez

Disney Channel darling no more! Selena shocks in this daring Atelier Versace peek-a-boo dress. The exposed sheer lace corset of this dress, along with the super high leg slit, make this outfit risqué, maybe even raunchy. I can’t decide whether I love or hate this gaudy apparel, but either way Selena is to be commended for her adventurous fashion choice.

Grade: B+

Miley Cyrus

Luckily for Miley her controversial performance overshadowed the fashion crime she committed on the red carpet. Her silly hairstyle and strange Dolce and Gabana outfit, complete with tacky oversized rhinestones, are both completely cringe-worthy. The wide band of gemstones encircling only one of her legs is a case of asymmetry gone wrong. The skin tight fit of the bodysuit leaves little to the imagination. It seems Miley’s current objective is to gain as much media attention as possible and she is succeeding brilliantly.

Grade: F

Katy Perry

I wanted to like Katy’s “Roar”-inspired dress, I really did, but I just couldn’t! While the dress fits her like a glove and the cheetah print is a nice play on her ever-present cat motif, there are just too many problems with her outfit. The high neckline makes it appear that her head is floating. The gilded butterflies glued to the top of the dress make the piece look overdone and distractingly busy. The most confusing part of the entire ensemble is the ratchet grillpiece in her mouth that read “Roar.” This dress in going in too many different directions, all of them very confusing.

Grade: D

Hey there! My name is Samantha Stern and I'm a graduating senior of mass communication with a concentration on magazine journalism at the University of South Florida. I've been writing for Her Campus USF since January 2013 and this semester I was appointed editor-in-chief of the online publication. Life is a stressful thing and I want to provide a means of escape and self- improvement for young women, as well as for myself, by writing fun, engaging and useful content accessible anytime and anywhere via the internet. My ultimate goal is to empower women in their 20's. Women are hungry for everyday life advice. They crave tips for achieving the ideal in money, intelligence, beauty, fashion, health and lifestyle. I will satiate their informational appetite and, more importantly, help them become their outright best by writing fun and practical content relevant to the modern 20-something.When I'm not writing you can find me reading magazines (duh!) and books, taking long, hot baths and exploring local haunts with friends and family.Feel free to follow we on Twitter @samantha__stern or check out my resume and portfolio by clicking here.
