5 Ways to Ease Homesickness

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

As a second year out of state student from New York, who attends school in Florida, I know that awful feeling of homesickness all too well. But as I learned very quickly in my collegiate years thus far, you are far from alone. Although it may feel as if others have no trouble being away from home, everyone experiences homesickness at some point. I am here to comfort you with the fact that homesickness is only temporary, while you adjust to your new life. And trust me, this new life will be far better and more exciting than your old one. But in case you are struggling a bit, here are some tips for easing homesickness.

.

1.     Hang up pictures on your wall

This is my favorite tip because it’s also an easy and fun way to decorate your residence hall or apartment. Print out pictures of your friends and family (of course this includes your pets) and tape them on your wall. I created a massive picture collage next to my bed, so when I wake up and go to sleep, my family is the first and last thing I see. Quick tip, you can upload the pictures you wish to print to Walgreen’s, pay for it online and they will be ready for pick up in about an hour. Lazy girl status: check!

2.     Send good morning/good night texts

One of the exciting things about being away at college is the fact that you have more freedom than you did back home. Freedom, however, doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to stop contacting your family. Sending these texts and updating them on what your day looks like, or how your day has been, can make you feel as if you’re still physically with them, regardless if you are 1,000 miles away from your family, like I am.

3.     Start a countdown for when you get to see you family and friends again

If you find yourself getting really homesick, starting a countdown will definitely help ease your struggle. When a day passes, you will feel relieved that you are one day closer to seeing those that you miss.

4.     FaceTime

This was a lifesaver for me last year. Being able to see your family or friends via FaceTime makes homesickness a bit more bearable.

5.     Get Involved

Involvement=distraction. There’s a reason they stress the importance of getting involved on campus every chance they get. Not only will you have tons of fun joining new clubs and organizations, but it is also a  great way to meet new people. My best friends in college have been made through my involvement in sorority life and living in the Business Living Learning Community on campus. You will shortly discover that your college friends will become your best friends in your life.

And most importantly, remember that your college years are the best years of life your life. Don’t take that for granted and let time slip by! Make the most of every minute and live life to the fullest.
