SPECIAL ASK HC: Getting help for an eating disorder.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USC chapter.

Hi, HC. I wanted to let you guys know that I thought Keeley Tarter’s article about her struggles with bulimia was really brave and well-written. I’m struggling with the same problem and I feel just as helpless and alone. I’m seeing a counselor but it isn’t really helping and I have no idea what to do. I was hoping maybe you could point me in the right direction?

HC: Hey, S. I’m sorry to hear about your struggles, and it’s really brave of you to come forward about them. It’s really hard when you feel like you’re losing control over your eating disorder and I know how much it affects every part of your life. We at HC applaud you for taking your health seriously enough to seek help.

Unfortunately, even though this is an advice column, it doesn’t sound like advice is what you need right now. It seems like you may need more substantial help. We’re not qualified to provide that, but we can do our best to point you in the right direction.
·      If you go to the USC Counseling Center, they can give you a referral for a new therapist, as well as a list of Los Angeles area therapists who specialize in eating disorders.
·      The National Eating Disorders Association offers a toll free, confidential Helpline Monday-Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Pacific Standard Time: 1-800-931-2237, and they have an entire section on their website devoted to seeking treatment. You can find that here: http://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/information-resources/general-information.php#seeking-treatment
The site includes an ED survival guide, questions to ask when considering treatment, and suggestions for ongoing support and recovery.
·      http://helpguide.org/mental/eating_disorder_treatment.htm is a non-profit website that provides tips on healthy living, coping skills and physical and emotional recovery.
·      http://www.halfofus.com/ Provides information on mental health and support, as well as inspirational stories of survivors.

We know it’s hard, but you’ve already started heading toward recovery. Stay strong and reach out to get the help you need. Everyone at HC is behind you!
