“Miel y Mantequilla”: Sebastián Otero’s Warm Morning Love Story

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPRM chapter.

2018 seems to be a great year for Puerto Rican indie artists, and young Sebastián Otero seems to be yet another musician ready to bring some great material to leave his own mark. The young singer-songwriter kicks off 2018 with “Miel y Mantequilla,” a warm love song that mixes his love for folk music with a little bit of hip hop and alternative r&b in order to tell a simple story about the types of conversations couples have while enjoying their morning breakfast.

Featuring a warm acoustic guitar, “Miel y Mantequilla” starts off with its chorus where Otero sets up the setting, which happens during breakfast, where he tells a story while also providing a few descriptions of the acts taken in said moment. He then moves on to sing about the conversations they have which involve topics such as love, family and everyday life. He eventually raps about these themes in the middle of the song when a mix of boom bap hip hop and alternative r&b kicks in. In ”Miel y Mantequilla,” the young artist demonstrates his ability to create a pop friendly track while keeping his identity as a rap enthusiast and Latino.

The video for “Miel y Mantequilla” further enhances the song’s experience. The Otero directed and Lynn Tachihara shot and edited visual features much of what the young musician sings and raps about while taking a bit of a short film approach. It is telling a story instead of being a typical music video. Featuring Otero and young actress Ana Marx, the music video shows these two artists as a young couple enjoying a warm morning where they get to play around, dance and enjoy their breakfast while having intimate conversations about the topics the song tackles. The visual to “Miel y Mantequilla,” is another example of how mixed music and videos are becoming in today’s artistic landscape.

With “Miel y Mantequilla,” the young musician Sebastián Otero shows that he’s an artist to look out for. His ability to craft a pop friendly mix of folk music, hip hop and alternative r&b shows his diverse musical tastes and the fields he’s willing to explore in order to find an original sound. The video for this single enhances the experience of the tune as it takes a bit of a short film approach where we get a brief glimpse at a young couple’s morning while addressing daily life topics. In sum, with this track Otero proves to have a great start to 2018 as he continues to leave his mark in the Puerto Rican independent arts movement.
