“Lucidity”: Chasing Nomads Display Their Brand of Indie Pop Rock

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPRM chapter.

While genres like hip hop, trap, R&B, reggaeton, and dancehall slowly rise to the top of Puerto Rico’s indie scene and mainstream, other artists like Dogos, Epilogio, and Chasing Nomads continue exploring the field of rock. Recently, one of the latter bands, Chasing Nomads, released their debut EP “Lucidity”, where they combined  their indie pop rock roots  with a little bit of dance rock and funk.

Starting the project is the track the EP gets its name from, and it’s a blend of spoken word and psychedelia that feels like the beginning of a short story. Afterwards, listeners are provided with “Speak,” a love song about communication and how it can break a relationship. Then the Nomads dip their feet into the field of dance rock with “Cycles,” which continues to explore the relationship being presented in the EP.

As mentioned previously, “Lucidity” moves along with the second-half’s opener “Mementos,” a groovy tune track that continues to tell the story of the relationship as the speaker looks back at the many memories brought forth by a variety of items. Then the group explores the field of funk rock with “So Low,” a tune with a Hendrix-like guitar feel. Finally, “Lucidity” closes smoothly with “As She Goes,” a nice dance rock song that shows a bit of inspiration from surf and psychedelic rock.

Chasing Nomads’ debut EP exhibits the band’s many influences while also showing how it can use nonlinear storytelling to their advantage. In sum, the project serves as a good introduction to a band that may have some mainstream potential.
