Pedacito de Gloria is a local baking business based in the west of Puerto Rico. It was founded by, best friends, Gloria M. Patrón Fidalgo, a second year chemistry student in the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez Campus, and Ámbar M. Vega Mejías, business administration student at the same university.

Gloria M. Patrón Fidalgo, aside from being part-time baker and co-owner of Pedacito de Gloria, is part of the UPRM choir group known as Chorium. She has always had a passion for baking and started her, unofficial, business in high school, where she sold blondies to the cafeteria to then be sold to the students. When she graduated and got into college she imagined  “reviving her business,” after that she saw the dessert stand at Cabra Tostá empty.

[Selling my desserts to Cabra Tostá] was an idea I’ve had for a while, but only decided to do something about it the day before Hurricane Maria hit. I went to the coffee shop with my mom and I ended up talking to Gabo (one of the owners of Cabra Tostá) about my desserts. He was very interested and wanted to try them so we scheduled a day to do a taste test. Then the hurricane came and all possibilities of making desserts disappeared,” described Patrón.

Ámbar M. Vega Mejías was originally going to accompany her best friend in her baking business as “moral support,” but after the “taste test” at Cabra Tostá, she offered her help in in all things social media. Mejías is also part of UPRM’s choir group “Coral Universitaria.” After the hurricane passed, Patrón was unable to continue with her plans of presenting her desserts to the coffee shop due to the lack of electricity and water. When Ámbar’s power returned, she offered up her home to Gloria so she would be able to go along with the, previously planned, “taste test.” After this, she began helping her friend in publicity for the business and, gradually, began learning how to make all the desserts. Now, they both contribute equal parts to the business.

“Gloria began, bit by bit, teaching me how to make the desserts. She’s the real mastermind behind the desserts and I deal, mainly, with product promotion. We both contribute a bit to the company,” Vega explained.

Gloria started her business by making blondies and has now, since, expanded her dessert menu to brownies, shortbread cookies, raspberry bars and so much more. She and her partner/best friend sell to businesses as well as dealing with commission orders.

Gloria M. Patrón Fidalgo and Ámbar M. Vega Mejías have started this business with the objective of making people happy by providing them with a delicious products. They are always experimenting with new flavors and creations that their diverse clients can enjoy.

Ámbar said, “Our purpose…[includes] being part of the group that can show students and young people that they can push our island ahead and support local businesses. It was definitely unexpected, but it was the best possible way to start 2018.

Pedacito de Gloria makes a diversity of desserts including Blondies, Brownies, Raspberry Bars, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Oatmeal Cookies, Cakes and Cabra Tostá’s famous goat-shaped shortbread cookies.
