What Exactly is Going on in the Kiwi Music Video?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPR chapter.

Harry Styles recently released the long-awaited music video for his newest single “Kiwi”. The song is off of his self-titled debut album, and the video was released on November 8, 2017. Styles first started this journey by asking fans to help him support this song to make it his next single. Once this was accomplished, the following step would be the music video. Harry teased on his social media for a while about said video and even posted stills for his fans.

Come the day of its debut, eager fans were left to impatiently wait for the music video to drop. Of course, the video was brought into the world, and a lot of people welcomed it with open arms. The only problem is, what exactly is the video about? Here are some questions we need answers to!

Where is everybody?

A young girl struts into a dimly lit school hallway, carrying a box of baked goods. There is nobody else in the hallway. Why isn’t there anybody else in this school? Why is she holding a box of cupcakes? Who are you? Why do you look angry?

Why are there sweets on the floor?

This is where I draw the line. There is a pile of sweets on the floor. Why is this happening? Why are they not eating these? Why is everybody holding sweets? Why is everybody angry! Where are your parents? Who made those? Why are they arguing?

Who is this kid?

You know who I’m talking about. The little blonde kid with the toothpick, who are you? Are you the main antagonist of this whole thing? Why are all these kids dressed so nicely? Are they all paying a tribute to David Bowie, or? The most relatable one here is Darmani that proceeds to say “what the fudge?” and then screams because someone threw a cupcake at his outfit. Same, Darmani.

Where’s Harry?

Oh, there he is. Wait, he has a puppy. Why does he have a puppy? There are more dogs. Where did these dogs come from? Why are they eating off the floor? Save the puppies!

Wait, they’re wearing matching suits. Is this girl his daughter? Why is Harry screaming? Is he disappointed this little girl ruined their matching suits?

What does that smirk mean?

Harry, why do you do this to us? Why are they taking a group photo? Were these his students?

A lot of people have been trying to decipher this. Some have referenced his past working in a bakery, others question whether they’re watching a music video for Kiwi or 3 minutes of Dunkirk, and some have even gone far enough to call it a depiction of our day-to-day reality of people threatening to go to war.

In the end, we can all agree, the Kiwi music video could have many meanings. It is a creative video with diversity including people of all races, religions, hair colors and hair types, and so much more. Apart from this, all we know about the video is that the title doesn’t seem to have a direct relation to the lyrics, and the lyrics don’t have a direct relation to the music video, so that’s Harry Styles for you.
