She’s incredibly sweet and you’ve noticed for sure her small bag filled with yarn and knitting needles. Her craftsmanship is incredible and her creations are certainly worth the look. Now, she’s getting her crochet headband business going. Find out who Alondra Santan is and why you should definitely check her creations out!
Her Campus at UPR: How long have you been crocheting?
Alondra Santana: I’ve been crocheting since I was 13 years old, so for about 8 years now.

HC UPR: When did you start crocheting? What inspired you to take up the pastime? ¿Cuándo comenzaste a tejer? ¿Qué te inspiró a aprender?
AS: I started crocheting when I was in eighth grade. I got interested one day when I was at my aunt’s house. I remember that after school one day I went to her house and she was crocheting, so I asked her to teach me and I picked it up.
Comencé a hacer croché cuando estaba en octavo. Me interesé un día cuando estaba en casa de mi tía, recuerdo que fuí después de la escuela y ella estaba haciendo croché, así que le pregunté si me podía enseñar y así fue que comencé.
HC UPR: Why is crocheting important to you? ¿Por qué tejer es importante para ti?
AS: Crocheting is something that’s very personal to me. It gives me the chance to creat something new. It helps me think and calm down when I’m stressing about something.
Croché es algo sumamente personal para mi. Me da la oportunidad de crear cosas nuevas. Me ayuda a pensar y a calmarme cuando tengo estrés por algo.
HC UPR: What are some of your favorite creations? ¿Cuáles son algunas de tus creaciones favoritas?
AS: I learned how to do crop tops and bralettes, but I am most proud of my headbands because it is a 100% my own design.
Aprendí a hacer “crop tops” y “bralettes”, pero de lo que estoy más orgullosa es de las banditas de pelo porque es 100% mi propio diseño.
HC UPR: When did you decide to start making headbands? ¿Cuándo decidiste comenzar a hacer las banditas de pelo?
AS: About a year ago. I was taking some basic classes on crocheting with a friend and I wanted to create something useful for everyday wear. That was when it hit me, Headbands! I used to buy a lot of elastic ones and they usually didn’t last long, so I started trying until I finally got what is the final design.
Hace un año atrás. Estuve tomando una clases básicas de croché con una amiga y quise hacer algo útil para usar todos los días. Ahí fue cuando me llegó la idea, bandas de pelo! Yo antes compraba muchas elásticas y no me duraban mucho, así que empecé a intentar de hacer una hasta que llegué a lo que ahora es el diseño final.
HC UPR: How long does it usually take to make one? ¿Usualmente cuánto te toma hacer una?
AS: It depends on the length and thickness but usually about an hour and a half to two hours.
Depende del largo y cuan anchas sean pero usualmente me tardo como una hora y media a dos.
HC UPR: What makes your pieces unique? ¿Qué hace que tus piezas sean únicas?
AS: I would have to say that the design is the most unique thing. It has two straps on the back and you can tie it to your liking. Another thing that makes the headbands unique and different is that most crocheted “headbands” I’ve seen are actually ear-warmers for cold temperatures. I wanted to make something a little more practical considering that we live on a tropical island! The material used is 100% cotton and in some cases polyester. The good thing about this is that when it gets dirty you can throw it in the washer, hang dry and you’re good to go.
Tendría que decir que es diseño es lo más único. Tiene dos tirantes a la parte de atrás que permiten que te puedas amarrar la bandita a tu gusto. Otra cosa que las hace diferentes es que muchas de las “banditas” tejidas que he visto usualmente son hechas para mantener las orejas calientes en temperaturas frías. Yo quería hacer algo un poco más práctico considerando que vivimos en el trópico. El material que uso es 100% algodón y en algunos casos poliéster. Lo bueno de este material es que cuando se ensucia lo puedes echar a lavar, después lo tiendes para que se seque y ya está listo para usar de nuevo.
