Movie Monday: The 12 Things We Need to See in Avengers: Endgame

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPR chapter.

Last year, on April 23,  Avengers: Infinity War came out, leaving all the fans heartbroken and a crying mess. Thanos’ snap not only erased fan favorites and 50 percent of all living creatures, but also any patience the fans had. We need answers, and the closer we get to the anxiously awaited April 26 of this year, the more desperate we get. Marvel doesn’t help by drowning us in trailers, posters, interviews and every type of content under the sun. After 11 years and 21 movies, we are more than ready to see the movie that will mark the end of a long journey. Infinity War destroyed our hearts, and Endgame promises to do the same. So, here are 12 things that we need to see on Avengers: Endgame to hopefully survive the 3 hours and 2 minutes of pure madness and heartbreak.

Warning: Spoilers from the past movies ahead!

A Thor and Captain Marvel Collaboration

To be fair, this would not have made the list if it wasn’t for the trailer. This is something that we didn’t know we needed, and now we can’t wait for it to happen. Thor, the God of Thunder who has lost everything, and Carol Danvers, arguably the most powerful woman in the universe, who is looking for her missing friend. Both of them are extremely powerful, but together they can bring the whole world to their knees (Loki could never). Two powerhouses are what we might need, not just to kill Thanos, but to bring everyone back. Just imagine how cinematically beautiful it will be to see their powers combined. And that’s without mentioning how they will no doubt offer the comic relief that we will certainly need. This movie will probably be the birth of another beautiful friendship, which leads us to our next point.

Steve and Tony’s Reconciliation

In Captain America: Civil War, the fans divided themselves into two groups: Team Ironman (the clearly superior one) and Team Captain America. Everyone strongly defended their favorite hero with a long list of arguments in their favor, and while it was fun, we missed the friendship between these two. In Infinity War, we were on the edge of our seats, rooting for that much-needed reconciliation, when Tony almost called Steve, but it never happened. We were left waiting for the moment that these two would reunite to kick Thanos’ butt. So now, in this next movie, we need it! We need the drama and we need this pair to work together again… some tears and a hug would also be appreciated. Separately, they are great heroes, but together they can be invincible.

Goose the Cat Safe and Well

We met this cutie in Captain Marvel and now we need more. Goose is the cutest and also a badass. Sadly, we didn’t see more of her in the past movie, which makes us ask… Is she okay? Where is she? Has she been fed since Nick disappeared or was she also snapped out of existence? We need to see the “Motherflerkening” cat to know that she’s okay.

A Nick Fury and Captain Marvel Reunion

Anyone that has watched Captain Marvel knows how iconic Carol and Fury’s friendship is. Seeing their interactions makes you wanna scream “Friendship Goals” at the top of your lungs. The bromance and chemistry between them are effortless and just plain hilarious. It’s also refreshing to see the soft side of Fury. In Infinity War, we saw that Fury is one of the victims of Thanos. Of course, he could not leave without throwing his “mothereffer” bomb and calling Carol to save his butt. And thanks to the trailer we know that Carol comes, skipping the knocking. We need this pair to find each other and be their hilarious selves. We also need Carol to expose Nick by telling others about how he actually lost his eye.

Loki Breathing Again

Loki is one of the best Marvel villains. His role is complex and multilayered. He has evolved to the point that he is not just Thor’s evil adopted brother that tried invading Earth, but someone that we care about. His relationship with his brother has also changed and, by the end of Thor: Ragnarok, he was redeeming himself and working by Thor’s side. We needed more of him trying to be good… but then he died within the first five minutes of Infinity War. Who cried with “the sun will shine on us again” line? I for sure did! He could have easily betrayed his brother again and saved himself (he has done it before, after all) and yet he stayed and died like a hero. He has also come back from the dead before, why he can’t do it again?

Nebula Kicking Thanos’ Butt

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is filled with some bad parents⎯from Howard Stark snapping at Tony to Odin being an assbutt to Loki and Hela and Ego wanting to take Peter Quill’s powers. Thanos obviously takes the cake. First and foremost, he kidnapped the little girls and raised them as his daughters. He brought them up to be killing machines (an upbringing like that couldn’t have been through hugs and kisses!). Then, when they betrayed him, he tortured them. He ended up killing Gamora, his favorite, to get what he wanted. She loved her sister (even if she tried to kill her a couple of times), it’s only fair that Nebula gets her vengeance. All she wanted was her father’s approval, yet all she received was pain and loneliness. She’s a badass and one of the survivors of the snap. We know by the trailer that she is going to work next to the Avengers to defeat Thanos. We can only hope she plays a big part in it.

Peter and Shuri Meeting Each Other

From the moment we saw Shuri, we knew that she and Peter Parker had to meet. Those two would get on like a house on fire. Marvel has a lot of iconic friendship duos, why not add one more? Imagine their friendship, full of Vine and meme references. Two young geniuses and geeks taking over the world together, what a sight to see. MJ and Jacob are awesome, but Peter needs more friends. Who better than Princess Shuri, the coolest person on Earth? Plus, by the looks of it, both of them are spending some time in the Soul Stone, so they might as well spend it together, right?

Clint and Natasha’s Reunion

The assassin duo has been separated long enough. We saw in the trailer that they find one and another, but we still need to see it! Both of them seem to be going through a tough time (so is everyone in the universe, thanks to Thanos!), and I don’t think there is another way to get through it than being together and relying on each other (the power of friendship and all that). These two are already family, and we need to see them interact and help each other heal (and we will hopefully heal along with them). Also, every time they are together is another opportunity to discover what the heck went down in Budapest!

Valkyrie

This badass warrior was introduced to the MCU in Thor: Ragnarok and she quickly became a fan favorite. After Valkyrie’s sexuality being confirmed by Tessa Thompson (the scene confirming her sexuality inThor: Ragnarok was cut!!!), she represents the bisexual community. By the end of Ragnarok, we see her next to Thor, but then in Infinity War, she is nowhere to be seen, and man, were we worried.

Thank the gods (or only Thor…since, you know, he is the only one alive at the moment) that she was confirmed alive and not “dusted.” But, where was she during the battle of Wakanda? Is she the only Asgardian left? Did she run away again? We need answers about the whereabouts of this warrior queen. We need her to find Thor and remind him that not everything is lost. We also need her to meet Carol Danvers, because queens should have each other’s backs (and if there’s any romantic intent in the mix, no complaint here!).

The Avengers Assemble Line

If you’ve ever read a Marvel comic, seen one of the animated series or movies, you know about this line. However, it has never been done in the MCU. We almost got it in Avengers: Age of Ultron…Or did we? The director of the film, Joss Whedon, confessed that he never intended to put the phrase and that Chris Evans (Captain America, who is commonly the one that said it in the comics and animated series) was never recorded saying it. But, with the imminent threat of everyone dying (or not coming back), wouldn’t this be the perfect moment to say it? If it is not said, will we have another chance to hear it in the future?

Everyone Reunited with Those “Dusted” by Thanos

We know that not everyone is going to make it to the end of this movie. Since Marvel’s announcement of Infinity War, we have been preparing for Tony or Steve’s death. Who would have thought? But now here we are, preparing ourselves for the impending death of beloved characters. So, in order to say proper goodbyes and make it less painful, we need for them to know that those gone will be back. Some examples are:

Steve and Bucky: These two have a long history of friendship between them. Sadly, Steve had to go through losing Bucky not only once but twice. After losing everything to save Bucky and get him to Wakanda, he could do nothing to save him from Thanos. So, no matter what happens with Steve, he needs to know that he saved Bucky again. We need to see them together, and if Steve does reach the end of the line, we want Bucky with him.

Tony and Peter Parker: The mentor-trainee (with father-son undertones) relationship these two have is heartwarming, so seeing Peter “dusting” in Tony’s arms felt like the end of the world. Like Steve, no matter Tony’s future, he needs to know that his apprentice (son) will be alright. Tony already carries so much pain and loss, he doesn’t need Peter’s death adding to that.

Rocket the Racoon and Groot: These two have the cutest relationship with each other (father-son undertones we see you!). Rocket already lost Groot once, he didn’t really need to go through this again. He lost everyone in their group, but Groot was his best friend (…and son), always by his side.

Okoye, T’Challa, and Shuri: We already know that Okoye would do anything for Wakanda and her King. Losing not only her King but the Princess and half of the people must have destroyed her.

Iconic A6 Shot

Out of all of the ones that died, you may have noticed that the six original Avengers are still alive. They’re also the ones that are in danger of not coming back (actor contracts are running out!). As an homage to the first Avengers movie, we need to see a remake of the iconic assemble shot. Don’t get me wrong, the lineup on the trailer looks badass, and everyone wants to see it, but sometimes a trip down memory lane is necessary.

We have waited a long time for this movie. It will probably break our hearts even more and leave us void for a while, but it will be worth it. This is not only the end of an era but the beginning of a new one. On April 26, go to theaters and root for your favorite heroes. Expect the best, prepare for the worst and, most of all, enjoy the movie.
