Ivelisse Nieves Jewelry Designer Fashion Show
Frida Kahlo’s fashion comes to life in a new jewelry line created by Puerto Rican designer Ivelisse Nieves. In her upcoming fashion show called “Las Dos Fridas”, Nieves will pay tribute to the mexican artist. HerCampus got the inside scoop on the designer’s first solo show and her other collections.
HCUPR: Tells us a little about yourself as an artist…
IN: I started my career in 2005 in the state of Virginia, in Chesapeake precisely was where I first opened up my studio. It wasn’t until 2007 when I arrived in Puerto Rico where I started merchandising my line in the gallery Fusion Islena, with a lot of other visual artists. There I started distributing my line. I have my studio in The Art Center in Norfolk, Virginia.
HCUPR: Can you tell us a little bit more about your designs?
IN: I work with different materials like: precious stones, semi-precious, rock crystals, precious metals, gold, silver, bronze, acrylic, freshwater pearls, saltwater pearls and swarovski crystals. The prices depend on the design. They start at about $75, because they are exclusive and unique pieces that are hand made. “
HCUPR: Who’s your target audience?
IN: Well, it’s directed towards any market. My designs are dedicated for any style and any occasion. From girls to adults, anyone can use it. I design according to the preference and the style of my clients. The most important thing is that the designs are unique and exclusive.
HCUPR: Is it exclusively jewelry?
IN: Right now I am working on a new line of purses called Bon Voyage that was from my past collection, which was inspired by the era of the 70s. It’s an hippie boho style and has a combination of different materials and textiles. Right now it’s in high demand and everyone has really liked the concept.”
HCUPR: Tell us more about your career…
IN: I have presented at various local catwalks, collective or individual, with other renowned designers here in Puerto Rico. I presented last year at the International Fashion Expo at the Virginia Fashion Week and the fashion week in New York. Now here in Puerto Rico, where I will be presenting for the first time my own show.
HCUPR: This will be your first very own show, can we get more details?
IN: The show will be on june 7th, 2013, in the Hotel Verdanza in Isla Verde. At 8 pm there will be a welcoming cocktail and at 9 the show will begin with 30 local models…very well known in the island. The make up will be by Estée Lauder and the hair by Esteban Montes Salon.
HCUPR: What was your inspiration for the show?
IN: [The show] Will display thee story and life of Frida Kahlo and her work. Through my jewelry, I will be representing [in an abstract manner] everything that was the life and artistic work of this great mexican artist.

Próximo Evento: Fashion Show de joyería inspirada por Frida Kahlo
La moda de Frida Kahlo cobra vida en la nueva colección de joyería de la diseñadora puertorriqueña, Ivelisse Nieves. En su próximo show tituladdo “Las Dos Fridas”, Nieves rendirá homenaje a la artista mexicana. HerCampus intrevisto a la diseãdora sobre su primer show individual y sobre sus otras colecciones.
HCUPR: Cuéntenos su trayectoria como artista…
IN: Comencé mi carrera en el 2005 en el estado de Virginia, en Chesapeake precisamente fue que abrí mi estudio. No fue hasta el 2007 que llegue aquí a Puerto Rico donde empecé a mercadear mi línea en la galería Fusion Isleña junto a otros artistas plásticos. Ahí fue que comencé a distribuir mi línea hasta el presente. Tengo mi estudio en The Art Center en Norfolk, Virginia.
HCUPR: Podrías explicarnos más sobre Ivelisse Nieves Jewelry…
IN: Trabajo con diferentes materiales como: piedras preciosas, semipreciosas, cuarzos, metales preciosos como oro, la plata. bronze, acrilico, perlas de agua dulce, perlas de agua salada y cristales de swarovski. Varían el costo dependiendo del diseño. Comienzan en unos 75 dólares en adelante, ya que son piezas únicas, exclusivas y hechas a mano.
HCUPR: ¿Hacia qué mercado se dirige su línea de joyería?
IN: Pues, está dirigido a cualquier mercado. Mis diseños están dedicados para cualquier estilo y para cualquier ocasión. Puede usarlo desde una niña, hasta cualquier adulta. Yo diseño de acuerdo al gusto y a la preferencia de mi cliente. Lo más importante es que los diseños son unicos y exclusivos.”
HCUPR: ¿Se limita a joyería solamente?
IN: Ahora mismo estoy trabajando una nueva línea de cartera titulada Bon VOyage, que fue de mi pasada colección, la cual es inspirada en la época de los años 70. Es un estilo hippie boho y tiene combinación de diferentes materiales y textiles. Hoy día ha tenido gran demanda y ha gustado muchísimo ese concepto.
HCUPR: Cuéntanos más sobre su carrera en la industria…
IN: Ya he presentado en diferentes pasarelas locales, colectivas o individuales juntos con otros diseñadores de renombre de aquí de Puerto Rico. Estuve presentando el pasado año en el International Fashion Expo en el Virginia Fashion Week y en la semana de la moda en Nueva York. Ahora aquí en Puerto Rico, donde estaré presentando por primera vez sola mi propio show.
HCUPR: Háblenos sobre su próximo show…
IN: El desfile se va a estar realizando el día 7 de junio del 2013, en el Hotel Verdanza en Isla Verde. A partir de las 8 de la noche contará con un “cocktail” de bienvenida y a las 9 comenzará el desfile con 30 modelos locales…muy reconocidas en la isla. El maquillaje sera hecho por Estée Lauder y el pelo por Esteban Montes Salon.
HCUPR: ¿Cuál fue su inspiración para el show?
IN: Se estará presentando la historia y la vida de Frida Kahlo y su obra. A través de mi joyería, voy a estar representando [de una manera abstracta] todo lo que pues fue la vida y la obra de esta gran artista mexicana.
