The Debate Starts Here

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPR chapter.

If you have a love for debating and building relationships with other countries, then Model UN will be the most exciting journey you’ll embark on. The University of Puerto Rico’s Model United Nations Chapter is an academic simulation of the United Nations. Students get the opportunity of participating as delegates of different countries, and get involved in debates and negotiations. During mock trials, students debate about issues that correspond to the different committees of the United Nations.

The Model UN of the UPRRP was founded in August 2010 by a group of students who participated from their high school’s organization. During the first year, the chapter had to overcome some challenges to improve. Now, the MONUUPRRP has a solid foundation and it counts with members from the entire campus. This student organization welcomes students from diverse backgrounds more so to promote debates during the trials.

Up to the minute, the model is divided into two teams; the debate team and the community service team. Both teams function individually but at the same time complement each other when it comes to formulating proposals and activities for the chapter Model UN. The debate team has competed in two trials at the University of Los Andes in Colombia. They’ve won a first place during the first competition, and second/third place during the second trial.

Erika Morales, junior and Model UN UPRRP delegate, says that her first experience with the model was during high school. “Model UN is my life. It’s where I have discovered what I want to do for the rest of my life. It’s where I’ve met some of my great friends and to me, it’s the ideal space to discuss issues that affect the peace and tolerance around the world. Model UN UPRRP allows students develop skills in persuasion, negotiation, writing, public speaking and it is a safe space to debate for tolerance and respect for diversity.”

Model UN has given Erika the necessary academic and personal tools for her life. She has experienced being abroad intellectually, and for that reason, she agrees that it has been the most fulfilling opportunity yet. While being a delegate for the chapter, Erika met the ONU Mujeres president, and got an amazing opportunity of doing research with them. So you see, being a member of this amazing organization can introduce you to a life-changing opportunity you can’t miss out!
