The Benefits of DACA

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPR chapter.

The United States is said to be the “Land of the Free”. It is the country you arrive to accomplish your goals and to live the so-called “American Dream.” Though there is no doubt that you can do whatever you want and can accomplish everything you strive for, almost no one reads the apparent fine print that is under the “American Dream”: that being a white citizen of the United States of Americas’, you have an advantage over your peers.

The immigration situation in the United States has been a heated topic for years, especially during the Obama Administration and now during the highly controversial Trump Administration.

Former President Barack Obama created the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program to help the children of undocumented immigrants in getting proper education and in, basically, avoiding deportation. When Obama finished his term and Trump stepped in, President Trump immediately started fulfilling his campaign promises concerning the deportation of all immigrants in the country. First came the Muslim Ban, and now he is going after the DACA Program.

Those who benefit from the program are the children of undocumented immigrants, and they are known as “DREAMers.” They are called this way because they are in the country so that they can fulfill the American Dream and can live a better life here than in their countries of origin.

Besides being a huge help for the young adults who need it, it also helps the United States of America and the DREAMers’ countries of origin. The so-called “Most Powerful Nation” is going through a tough time, and it could use a new generation of professionals to help the country out.  The next generation of doctors, lawyers, writers, actors, teachers, and professors might not all be born in the United States, and that is a good thing. Everyone should have the same opportunity to fulfill their dreams.

Immigration is a very complex subject. While the immigrants who make it to another country, such as the United States, manage to move forward, their homeland suffers greatly since those who leave are usually young people and those who stay are mostly the elderly. This means that immigration can actually make the poverty rate in some countries ascend. However, a program like DACA can eventually help those countries out. The opportunity that DACA offers for young immigrants is one they might not receive elsewhere. Immigrants might want to take this opportunity, so that one day they may return to their country of origin and help in whatever way they can.

Besides that, if they were to choose to stay in the United States, DACA will allow them access to basic things like applying for a credit card, getting a driver’s license, and most importantly: a good education. With a good education comes the chance to find a good job and a good job has pretty great benefits, like health care.

It is not hard to allow a person to enter the country because they might want to better their lives and make a difference. Times are tough; the way that situations in immigrant’s countries are reported in the United States like do not allow for immigrants to get the help that they need. The media can sometimes unhelp immigrants in the United States, and this causes the benefits of DACA to be ignored.

DACA is a program that is beneficial in many ways and it is worth the investment of the government. We can only hope that the very government has a change of heart.
