4 Artists that I Found by Coincidence and Are Now on My Favorites List

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPR chapter.

If there’s something that I love, it’s finding new music for my playlists. Sometimes I think about all the unique songs out there I’ll never be able to listen to and it’s just sad. When it comes down to music, I’m all about exploring. I always pay close attention to the sounds in my environment, and I constantly ask for recommendations. So, whenever I come across a new artist or band, I’m instantly hyped about the possibility of welcoming new songs into my life.

The following is a list of four musical artists that casually appeared in my life and are now a part of my favorites playlist:

Reuben and The Dark

I have a special place in my heart for the indie-folk genre, and Reuben and The Dark is part of it. The first time I listened to this Canadian band was in the Dolittle (2020) movie trailer, along with a cover of “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong. This cover that featured Adrianne González —better known as AG— had a mysterious and powerful vibe that engaged me from the very beginning. I searched for the band, and I couldn’t have been happier when I found all of their stunning songs. A couple of weeks ago, the band released “Change” and it would be a shame if you don’t give the song a listen.

Two Feet

My beloved Two Feet popped up on my Spotify Discovery Weekly Playlist a year ago, and since then, I haven’t stopped listening to him. He is an electronic/alternative rock musician from New York City. He was first known because “Go Fuck Yourself” went viral on SoundCloud. Recently, another one of his older songs, “Love Is a Bitch,” was the star of some TikTok videos— if you keep up with trends on the app, you probably already know what I’m talking about. If not… look it up. His songs have a fascinating, sensual aura that will not disappoint you.

Ximena Sariñana

The first time I heard Ximena Sariñana, I was walking out of campus when “Cobarde” by this Mexican singer started playing through my headphones. At that moment, I was dealing with a ‘broken heart’ and when that song emanated from my speakers, I literally stopped walking. It was like the universe was sending me a message. One of her latest releases, “Una vez más,” is one of my favorites, but “Cobarde” earned an special place in my heart. Ximena Sariñana, who sings pop, rock, and Latin pop songs became one of my favorite artists and I don’t think I’ll get tired of her music anytime soon.

No Te Va a Gustar

Contrary to their band name, these artists sí te van a gustar. Shoutout to my best friend for showing me this Uruguayan band that mixes candombe, Caribbean ska, and rock to create a unique and absolutely wonderful musical experience. They have a one-of-a-kind vibe and their songs are full of meaning and emotions. It feels fantastic listening to them through my headphones, especially when “Me ilumina hoy,” one of my favorites, is playing. Also, they’re releasing a new album soon, and I can’t wait to listen to their new verses.

Music is an important part of our lives and you should enjoy it as much as you can. I urge you to look for new artists, genres, and sounds— you would be surprised with all the possibilities out there. But, hey! Sometimes you don’t need to try very hard to find amazing music. Sometimes, the music ends up finding you.
