Lets start with the basics, where can we find political news? In today’s media culture, a better question would be where can’t you find political news? We probably all know about the powerhouse news outlets such as Fox News, CNN, PBS, NPR and the Washington Post. Though they are generally thought to be credible (depending on the day), they are such large outlets that the amount of information they have is impossible to keep up with. When you’re in college its so easy to feel like you don’t even have time to get into even a little of it. That’s totally fair, and I’m here with you homie!

Listed below are a couple news outlets that give you daily political and sometimes non-political news with no B.S.:

The Skimm (sends to your email, don’t worry they won’t spam you!)

https://www.theskimm.com

@jessicayellin – posts daily on her Instagram stories to ‘Separate News from Noise’

Texas Tribune (specifically news about all things Texas):

https://www.texastribune.org

@makerswomen – Instagram account for women activists, #SMH (‘should’ve made headlines’) posts

Why should I trust them?

It’s good to be cautious of how factual the news you keep up on is! As the young new voters of the USA we have a responsibility to society to keep up with the news as best as we can, and be active in our democracy. The current time we are in politically, is widely considered one of the most controversial times in America’s political history. There is so much political news constantly flying around every media outlet available it’s overwhelming to everyone. It probably does not help that our President and a lot of the current government officials are referring to popular news channels as “fake news”. Luckily, there are a lot of resources that allow you to fact check.. and then fact check that fact check!

Listed below are some ways to check the things your reading, before you yell at someone about it:

Okay so we’ve read all this news.. How do I keep my mind from exploding?

There is so much news pouring out of every media outlet available it can be overwhelming to say the least. First off, give yourself a pat on the back for caring about political news at all! There are ways to calm yourself down and have moments of peace in our busy world.

List of ways to distract yourself from noise, remain calm and be productive:

– Paint your nails

– Face masks

– 7 day free trial of the Calm app Calm.com (meditations and nature noises)

– Workout

– Delete the social media apps off of your phone for a while

– Eat fruits and vegetables daily

– Read Ellen DeGeneres’ news outlet: goodnewsnetwork.com

– Journal what you’re feeling, especially when you’re overwhelmed
