James Charles X Morphe Collab: Will it Leave You Sister Shook?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNT chapter.

Morphe cosmetics has just launched their much anticipated collection in collaboration with our favorite sister, James Charles.

In case you’ve been living under a rock or in another universe with no sense of Wi-Fi, Charles is a 19-year-old who has taken the beauty community by storm. Hosting one of the fastest growing beauty channels on Youtube, Charles recently surpassed 10 million sisters within the span of three years.

Sister James revealed his collab with Morphe on November 2nd, via his Youtube channel (below). Opening the video with an iconic self-produced campaign commercial where he shows off his vocals, and thus ringing true to his ‘inner artist’ campaign, with looks created by his very own palette.

This collection consists of a gorgeous custom palette to say the least, along with a brush set. The palette ($39) has 39 beautiful shades, from stunning rich neutral warm tones to insanely pigmented rainbow mattes, the ability create any look possible with just the one palette itself, is undeniable. The endless scope includes minimalist makeup wearers to those who prefer to experiment with colors for a more bold rainbow-esque glam. This is the direction and vision Charles had in mind when creating this palette. He wanted to create something that had never been done before, for all artists and non-artists out there where they could find any eyeshadow they needed to create any look imaginable all in one single palette.

The palette’s campaign and tagline “Unleash Your Inner Artist,” is the epitome of Charles himself. He not only prides himself in his skill but also preaches that makeup is one of the many art forms.

“My mission as an artist since I joined the community has always been…doing things nobody would ever dare to do,” he says. “Taking a step away from tutorials and making beauty videos actually entertaining, playing with color, and playing with avant garde looks that most people wouldn’t necessarily deem ‘wearable everyday content.’”

In the video, Charles swatched all 39 shades, while explaining the concept of his palette with both eyeshadows and pressed pigments.

He explained that the difference between an eyeshadow and a pressed pigment was that while eyeshadows have other ingredients added to the formula, pressed pigments are the pure color pigment, pressed into an eyeshadow pan with no ingredients added.

“Pressed pigments allow you to create the most vibrant product ever and I’m so incredibly proud of these. As an artist, I will say straight up to you guys,” Charles said. “Some of these pigments are a little bit harder to work with, just because you have to use slightly different techniques. But once you figure them out, they are so incredibly beautiful.”

Regardless of the transparency that Charles shows in his video, he gives advice on how these pigments would work best on the eyes and what primer or concealer to use.

Even then though people were quick to create a controversy, claiming that he faked the swatches in order to make them look better, our sister James was quick enough to shut down these rumors right away, addressing them via Twitter and Instagram, explaining he had to sometimes double or triple swatch due to minor mishaps while filming the video. He further went on to Instagram stories to live swatch all of the shades.
