It Starts With Us- 9 Eco-Friendly Alternatives

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNT chapter.

Plastic has recently been filling our oceans. According to Ocean Conversancy, plastic is found in more than 60% of seabirds and sea turtles species. These ocean animals often mistake the plastic for food and it is life-threatening to their digest system.

What can we do? As humans, we can reduce plastic in the waste system by increasing what we reuse.

Some reusable alternatives include…

Brita

The Brita is a water filter that can transform your regular tap water into drinkable, tasty water. The Brita also can reduce the amount of plastic from water bottles that people consume to quench their thirst.

Reusable Water Bottle

Reusable Water Bottles are portable and make it easier to carry around with you at every event or on campus. There are many reusable bottles, ramblers, and tumblers that are useful but some of my favorites include HydroFlasks, Yeti, Bevgo, and Target bottles.

Biodegradeable Products

Biodegradable is a term used for objects and substances that can easily be decomposed by bacteria and other living organisms. These products are great for the environment because they will break down naturally. Almost every product that we use on a daily basis comes in a biodegradable form.

Reusable Bags

The easiest alternative to replace. Reusable bags are found at all stores, markets and anywhere you look. These bags are affordable and can be used on different occasions and in all situations. Grab some bags and bring them on your next shopping trip.

Makeup Remover Pads

Makeup removal wipes are getting clogged in the sewage systems and contribute to blockages and cause water companies billions of dollars. 100% Compostable wipes and Reusable makeup remover wipes can eliminate the cost for the water companies and clear our sewage ways.

Silicone and Metal Straws

Silicone and Metal Straws are perfect for when you go to restaurants or enjoy a smoothie or boba tea. Plastic straws are ending up in the ocean and are mistaken for food by marine life, most specifically turtles.

Blueland – Glass and Mirror Cleaner

Blueland’s motto is ‘Cleaning up our planet starts with cleaning our homes.” According to Blueland’s website, we can eliminate 100 billion single- used plastic bottles in the United States alone because our cleaners live in 100% reusable bottles.

Earth Hero

Earth Hero is an environmentally friendly company that provides many eco-friendly products to shop from.
