Extensive Electives 101: Good Psychology Classes for Non-Psychology Majors

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNT chapter.

Disclaimer: While most classes require only General Psychology as a prerequisite in the author’s university, prerequisites may vary across colleges.

Psychology can prove fascinating for several people, but a psychology major has certain limits in careers that other majors can provide. However, psychology as an elective could give you an edge in the field with more knowledge of social skills and behavioral processes.

As a finishing Psychology major myself, I have some background in these classes from myself and from classmates. If you fall into other majors but still want to somewhat pursue psychology, some of these classes may be for you!

Education: Cognitive Psychology & Developmental Psychology

Cognitive Psychology covers what learning strategies work for most students; meanwhile, Developmental Psychology touches on developmental milestones that both teachers and parents could follow.

Biology, Nursing, Public Health, & Pre-Med: Health Psychology & Psychophysiology

Psychophysiology, though a challenge, provides an in-depth analysis of the biological processes associated with psychology; it works similar to a Neuroscience course without as many prerequisites. Health Psychology covers the discipline of health psychology, which addresses the intersection of disease and mental health.

Business: Industrial-Organizational Psychology

This class analyzes the sub-discipline of industrial-organizational psychology, which mainly focuses on how to manage businesses and employees in a productive manner. So, this class would serve anyone looking for a role in management.

Criminology & Law: Psychology of the Offender & Abnormal Psychology

Psychology of the Offender addresses how a so-called “offender” thinks. Since concepts such as antisocial behavior stems from abnormal psychology, Abnormal Psychology would serve as a good supplemental class.

Social Sciences (e.g. Anthropology, Political Science, Sociology): Multicultural Psychology or Psychology of Race

Both classes cover the sociocultural influences on behavior and thought. Multicultural Psychology elaborates on more elements than race, but race is incredibly complex, which is when Psychology of Race may be essential.

If you’d like to deepen your repertoire with “knowledge about knowledge,” take a look at your major and see what classes interest you!

Hi, I'm Kylie! I am currently a Psychology major at the University of North Texas. In my downtime, I enjoy many artsy things, so that's what most of my writing will be about.
