Who Will You Choose? UNL ASUN Elections

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNL chapter.

With over 20,000 students enrolled at UNL, it’s hard for everyone to have their opinions heard. Each year, students elect representatives to ASUN, the student government. A recent Daily Nebraskan article noted that most students don’t even know who their representatives are or what they do. This year, 3 parties are running for office. Before you vote on March 6, take a minute to decide which party you feel will best represent you throughout the next year at UNL.

Sense

The Sense party candidates are Sarah Cast, Blake Rostine, and Anders Olson. Between the three of them, they are involved in over 30 different organizations on and off campus. The party has 4 platforms: sense of community, sense of sustainability, sense of health, and sense of reform. Some of their ideas include creating a “Celebrate Nebraska Week” to create a feeling of community at UNL, helping to make UNL a greener campus, assessing student opinion on having designated smoking areas on campus, and improving pieces of the university’s student government.

Revive

Candidates for the Revive party are Zach Stull, Sierra Allen, and Sam Adams. Their goal is to increase the students’ voice on campus. Revive has 3 platforms that they are running with. The first is to revive student involvement, with ideas like bringing back block seating at football games and placing stronger emphasis on philanthropic events. The second, connect students to their resources, would try to allow students the opportunity to find relevant information and help on campus such as help centers and tutoring sessions. The last platform is to fight increasing student costs.

Engage

The executive candidates are Eric Reznicek, Kaitlin Coziahr, and Jeff Story. Engage runs with 3 platforms: engage students, engage sustainability, and engage student organizations. To engage students, the Engage party suggests developing an orientation program to help international student adjust to life at UNL, as well as establishing a college preparatory program in South Omaha. For their second platform, Engage would like to continue the work that ASUN’s Environmental Sustainability Committee is already doing. Engage would also like to expedite the process of becoming a registered student organization and to increase involvement within campus organizations.

Your vote is important in order to ensure that UNL’s student government represents YOU. Voting will be next week, March 6. For more information on any of the parties running for office, you can like them on Facebook or follow them on Twitter.
